About this listen

In the darkest days of the American Revolution, Francis Marion and his band of militia freedom fighters kept hope alive for the patriot cause during the critical British southern campaign. Like the Robin Hood of legend, Marion and his men attacked from secret hideaways before melting back into the forest or swamp. Employing insurgent tactics that became commonplace in later centuries, Marion and his brigade inflicted losses on the enemy that were individually small but cumulatively a large drain on British resources and morale.

In The Swamp Fox, the first major biography of Marion in more than 40 years, John Oller compiles striking evidence to provide a fresh look at Marion the man and how he helped save the American Revolution.

Enjoyed this book very much. Have known about the Swamp Fox for years, but this book highlights so much about the real person and why he is a legend in American History.

A South Carolina Hero

This history is well-organized, well-written, and doubtless accurate, but lacks much color or romance, which perhaps is all that should be expected of a historical tome. Having finished it, I feel like I know Marion better. I find that he does indeed deserve the admiration that his exploits engendered, but don't really feel like I have heard a story. I do feel like it was worthy of my time, but now i would like to be entertained.

Plenty of reality, but little romance

As a South Carolina native and Huguenot who grew up in Charleston, I founded the book to be a great reminder of our history.

Thank you for this book.

outstanding story

I learned quite a bit from this book. I’m guilty of having only a surface appreciation of Francis Marion so this book did a great job of correcting that error. The story unfolded seamlessly and was enjoyable to follow.

Informative

it was an interesting listen. It is nice to hear the historical account. I liked the Patriot, but wanted to hear a historical account of the character that was roughly portrayed around.

Good read

... the somewhat tepid telling Cannot be laid at the foot of the author or the narrator. There simply does not seem to be a lot of source material to flesh-out the career of Francis Marion. Nonetheless, Oller sticks to his task doggedly, and as an unrepentant admirer of the swamp fox, accomplishes a very credible and informative biography.
But if you want the rattle of musketry and the excitement of the charge… Better stick to Mel Gibson.

Not terribly scintillating history, but…

this book is for war history enthusiasts. Francis Marion used Guerrilla tactics in the swampy area of South Carolina against General Cornwallis and his subordinates such as Tarleton. it shows Francis Marion taking down the British forts and their war of posts. it shows Francis Marion retreating from Superior forces and then attacking them by ambush.

straightforward biography

There are many hero’s of our country that we learn about in school and the exploits of the Swamp Fox should be included in that education.
