Publisher's summary

Nursing a broken heart, Robbie Jordan is trading in her life on the West Coast for the rolling hills of Southern Indiana. After paying a visit to her Aunt Adele, she fell in love with the tiny town of South Lick. And when she spots a "for sale" sign on a rundown country store, she decides to snap it up and put her skills as a cook and a carpenter to use.

Everyone in town shows up for the grand reopening of Pans 'n Pancakes, but when the mayor's disagreeable assistant is found dead, Robbie realizes that not all press is good press. With all eyes on her, she'll have to summon her puzzle-solving skills to clear her name, unscramble the town's darkest secrets, and track down a cold-blooded killer - before she's the next to die.

"Day's series debut provides some quirky characters and red herrings along with the obligatory romantic interest and recipes." ( Kirkus)

Distracting

Where does Flipped for Murder rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I haven't a problem with the storyline. My issue is with the narrator. The story is about a young woman, the narrator sounds like an older lady whose voice has a hint of shakiness in it. It makes it hard to focus on the story and what is going on. My mind keeps picturing an older lady. I have to remind myself she is not.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Laural Merlington?

absolutely not.

Incredibly Bland

Flipped for Murder had the potential to be entertaining, if only the characters were not so incredibly bland. In particular, country store/café owner Robbie was hard-working yet boring as hell, however none of the small town residents were unique or engaging.

Robbie did not seem to fit into the small, mid-western town where her mother grew up. She kindly rescued a stray cat but did not take the animal to a vet (anyone in food service should be more health conscious); she went for a walk in a state forest without being aware of the possible dangers (wild animals, hunting season).

When there were several attempts on her life, Robbie seemed too dense to realize that her life was seriously in danger. I really expected that a woman in her late 20s who had the ability to open her own business would have more common sense. I wanted to care what happened to Robbie but I could hardly stay awake.

Not my favorite but I'll read the next book

As many listeners have already stated, the reader does NOT sound like a 27 yr old and that is a HUGE detractor! Perhaps Jae Delane would work a lot better.
The story itself has one big flaw and that is the romance that simply flourishes far to fast. The last thing I would want to do when starting a new restaurant is invite someone to dinner!!!!!! You're dead on your feet after cooking/waiting tables all day.
I'll read on because there is potential....

Voice was hard for me

Had a really hard time with the narrators voice. The character in the book was supposed to be younger but voice did not match. Very disconcerting. Had a hard time feeling like I could get lost in the story.

I Just Didn't Care

This book was so boring that I couldn't finish it and just didn't even care who committed the murder. Also the narration was extremely boring! Not a good choice for me!

Not sure I flipped for the story

Pretty good story, but not the best I've read or listened to. Might be awhile before I listen to the second one.

Antiques, Atmosphere, Allegations and Arrests

A fun and interesting murder mystery set near Nashville, Indiana . . . an artsy, touristy area in the southern part of the Hoosier State . . . known for the beauty of its fall leaves, country crafts and down-home feeling, folks travel there in droves . . . myself included . . . not far from the state border with Kentucky . . . plenty of hillbillies reside in Indiana, having crossed the Ohio River, north into Indiana . . . so it is the perfect setting for Robbie Jordan's Country Store/Restaurant, Pans 'n Pancakes . . . I agree with other reviewers, that the narrator's voice sounds a bit old for a 27 year-old woman, but do like the quaint, country sound of it . . . another irritation is the author's obvious dislike of firearms, which lends nothing to the story, and her "new age" religious beliefs, which not explored to great lengths, also add nothing to the book . . . the overall tale of the murder, townsfolk, Robbie's family . . . and discovery of her past are great . . . well worth the listen . . .

Nah--I wasn't impressed

Cookie cutter story-- character "accents" leave a lot to be desired. For me, I won't be purchasing another Maddie Day book.

It was good

This book was a good read for those who like cozy mysteries. Some things go unexplained or not followed up but all in all a good read

charming mystery with exciting characters

This is a fun listen with characters that "feel like home"! The narrator creates distinct characters and keeps the listener sitting just waiting for what happens next!
