Publisher's summary

Today's parents are all but completely disconnected from the commonsense parenting wisdom of their parents and grandparents. The self-esteem parenting revolution has erased the practical insights gathered by generations of parents about the best way to raise kids. In this book, family psychologist John Rosemond seeks to recover this wisdom by resurrecting what parents of yesteryear tended to say.

Maxims such as "because I said so", "children should be seen, not heard", and "you're acting too big for your britches" are more than cute sayings for John. They are parenting principles, springing from a biblical view of the world. John makes the case that these principles from the good old days are just as valid today and will help parents to pass on values to their kids so that they can succeed at life. Grandma was right after all!

He is right, actually Grandma was right.

I'm old enough to have benefited from Grandma's parenting style, and sad for today's youth.

Great but kind of misleading

What did you love best about Grandma Was Right After All!?

Great overview of the common sense practical approach to parenting. Encourages you to really think about your kids needs rather than relying on the experts to tell you. It also gives you the needed encouragement that you can be a confident leader for your child without a PHD in child psychology.

Any additional comments?

I do have a problem with this book. You get the sense that he is recommending cold parenting and draconian punishments. Yet from the rest of his books and you tube videos, he is not this way. I find him be reactionary against the Dr. Spock types gone wild. So I really believe that you should read making the terrible 2s terrific and the well behaved child first. You 'd think that he enthusiastically endorses spanking and such, however he doesn't...his postion is that it may have its place in rare occasions. When I think of Grandma style I thinking belt.

Refreshing Perspective

A refreshing perspective that, unfortunately, has gone by the wayside, but used to be the normal: raising respectful, humble, grateful children, who are all the happier, well- adjusted, and successful for it. Not to mention that the family unit is calmer and stronger for it. I really took much of this book to heart and it gave me the "permission" and encouragement to parent with true, calm but assertive leadership (when no one else around us is offering this common sense wisdom these days. My daughter's behaviors have changed significantly in the past week, alone, after incorporating some of these shifts in my mindset and parenting style. Even if you take some of the ideals or strong statements with a grain of salt, I would say it's a must-read for parents of our generation, who have been left confused by the over-complicating/ psycho-analysis-heavy parenting philosophies out there. (And that's coming from an elementary school teacher with her masters-- heavy into the philosophies and psychology.) I found this book to really outline the root and truth of the issues of our current day.

For parents who have problems with their kids

This is for the parents who are looking for a how to be a parent book. Really good solutions before they turn their kids into little prince and princesses. But many parents who don't read wouldn't pick this up anyway.
