Publisher's summary

From the internationally best-selling author of Nefertitiand Cleopatra's Daughter comes the breathtaking story of Queen Lakshmi - India's Joan of Arc - who against all odds defied the mighty British invasion to defend her beloved kingdom.

When the British Empire sets its sights on India in the mid-nineteenth century, it expects a quick and easy conquest. India is fractured and divided into kingdoms, each independent and wary of one another, seemingly no match for the might of the English. But when they arrive in the Kingdom of Jhansi, the British army is met with a surprising challenge.

Instead of surrendering, Queen Lakshmi raises two armies - one male and one female - and rides into battle, determined to protect her country and her people. Although her soldiers may not appear at first to be formidable against superior British weaponry and training, Lakshmi refuses to back down from the empire that is determined to take away the land she loves.

Told from the unexpected perspective of Sita - Queen Lakshmi's most favored companion and most trusted soldier in the all-female army - Rebel Queen shines a light on a time and place rarely explored in historical fiction. In the tradition of her best-selling novel, Nefertiti, and through her strong, independent heroines fighting to make their ways in a male-dominated world, Michelle Moran brings nineteenth-century India to rich, vibrant life.

As expected, an excellent novel NY Michelle Moran

A really fascinating glimpse into a fascinating culture, with characters I genuinely cared about. Even knowing it would end in tears, I kept hoping otherwise. The narrator was excellent, with a melodic and graceful voice somehow making each character distinct.

So loved this story

Listening to this was very exciting. The details are so clear that I could actually picture the scene. I would love to see this turn into a movie. Although there parts of the book that are fictional the intent of the book is educational.

Fascinating

Moran paints a lush, detailed portrayal of how life was for a young, Indian village girl. A world devoid of many options if you had no dowry and yet education was the ultimate pass to freedom.

I loved the intricate descriptions of both the characters and their surroundings. A great book to bring history to life in those times.

Good Book, Great Performance

I've always enjoyed most of Michelle Moran's books. She does a great job blending fiction and history into an entertaining story. The Rebel Queen was no exception. Being about a profound culture I've always found fascinating and about a time period I know little about, I really loved learning a bit about the British take over of India and about this queen I'd never heard of.

But what really made the story for me was the narrator. Mathan was exceptional. Her pacing, accents, and the distinguishing voices created an incredible atmosphere I just got lost in. I would listen to anything else she's narrated in a heartbeat.
