Publisher's summary

Sent to London by her untrustworthy uncle, the beautiful and feisty Katherine Ralston arrives for the Season in utter despair. Not only is she caught up in the mad whirl of ballgowns and galas, she must also make certain that her disreputable uncle doesn't sell her family estate in her absence. Katherine Ralston, a country girl at heart, sees the Season in London as something she must endure.

Nicholas Varnon, known as the Black Duke for his rakish and irresistible charms, sees the season as a chance to repair his rakish reputation. Yet, he seems to be taking quite an interest in the spirited Katherine. Suspicious of trickery, Katherine is determined to ignore the sinfully sexy charms of the Black Duke. Little does she know, she may have just met her white knight in shining armor....

Contains mature themes.

Critic reviews

"Absolutely delightful . . . if you aren't reading the smaller Regencies you are missing a rare treat. The stories are innovative and the characters lively. Good job, Ms. Enoch. " ---Affaire de Coeur

I can't stop reading it!

This book has all of the right components, for me:
1. There must be humor
2. There must be a makeover, i.e. Cinderella
3. A strong, smart, much loved heroine
4. A strong, yet at times, vulnerable hero
5. It must make me cry, either happy tears, sad tears, or just loving the book and hating for the book to end.

This is the real thing! Just read it, you won't be disappointed!

Loved it

I usually never finish a book on one day but this book kept me interested and I would listen to it again. I enjoyed that Catherine was not a wimpy character and knew who she was and what she wanted. I also like that she could hold her own with the Duke and doesn't take his crap but yet have chemistry between them. I also loved that this was a clean romance similar to Jane Austen's pride and prejudice. It's a worth read/listen. Anne did ok even though she is not my favorite narrator but she doesn't butcher the book.

I don't like the heroine. She's awful.

The heroine makes you dislike the book. She is very hateful. Why would he want her. I wanted him to walk, no run away, and never look back. This one hurts. On the positive side, I enjoyed the narrator

There were some good funny parts

But I don’t think it is one of the best Suzanne Enoch has written. Although in fairness, part of it might be the narration. I wouldn’t mind Anne Flosnik narrating if she didn’t try so hard. Her “weepy” voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. It would be better if she just used a softer voice. And her male voices are not fabulous, but again I think it is because she tries to hard. Often I like the voice she uses for side characters better than the main ones because she isn’t trying so hard with them. I don’t stay away from books she narrates, but I won’t listen to one specifically because she is reading it.

As for the book itself... there were some good funny parts and times I laughed out loud. I liked the storyline a lot. I did not like that Kate always got mad at the Duke. Not sure how he fell in love with that but I’ve seen it in real life, so who am I to say? Lol

Great story terrible narrator

The story was riveting and suspenseful. From the very beginning the narrator was overly dramatic pressured speech was distracting and nearly ruined the whole experience

Abusive and immature heroine

Would have enjoyed the story had she not been abusive. He just took it and she never apologized like it was all his fault and he deserved it. That was irritating. She never learned. Loved the hero but felt he deserved better.

Kept my interest

The protagonist is a bit too much of a shrew and there’s a bit too much kidnapping going on to make it believable, but I liked it anyway.

Yes

It made me smile. Very good story. No sex- all story. It was a pleasure to listen. I Am concerned however to any relationship this imitates- very tempestuous and they have a lot of growing up to succeed in having true peace in their home.
