Publisher's summary

Sarah Miller hasn't been home in seven years. She thought she could stay away forever. If it wasn't for her big brother's wedding, that is. Part of her even feels silly for staying away this long. It's not like anyone even knew what happened. Well, except for him. That guy.

The one she compared all others to. The one who set the bar so high no other guy after him could even compete. The one who made her feel like anything was possible. The one she thought she would never be good enough for. The one she spent the last seven years trying to forget. All she needs to do is make it through the next week without running into him.

3.5 Stars

These are the reviews I am not sure what to write. I really like Lucy Rivers as a narrator; she always makes you feel a part of the story.
For me the story was just ok. Nothing really stood out for me. I wanted to like it more than I do. It was well written.
Usually I am not a fan of the back and forth from past to present but this book it was seamless. The story never felt like it paused.
Sarah is a runner, when things get hard or if she isn't ready for the outcome she runs.
Will I found to be an ok guy? I wanted him to be so much more. I think I am a little disappointed, maybe because he didn't fight enough for Sarah.
I wouldn't call it a cliff-hanger because the story just drops off, to me a cliff-hanger leaves you wanting, wanting, wanting, or needing more.

Overall a good listen, I am still glad I upgraded the whisper sync.

First Chapter says it all

This entire novel could be told in no more than five sentences. And that is exactly what this author does. She retells the plot over and over and over again. She alternates between the characters currently and when they were in high school. Unfortunately, while she uses different words (sometimes,) the chapters that cover past events repeat themselves, could have been stated once up front, then never repeated again.

Just like no matter how many times you tell a lie, it doesn't make it true, no matter how many times an author simply repeats herself, it doesn't make a plot.

Needless to say, I found this to be one of the most boring books I have attempted to read lately. I could not finish it and do not recommend it.

The most amazing thing though is I understand readers can also be subjected to a second book, that evidently tells the exact same non-plot but from the man's perspective. I've seen lots of so-called novels written by so-called authors that seem to sell, even though there is absolutely no plot. But it is something of a hat trick if Heywood can actually stretch absolutely nothing into two novels. Will readers really buy the second book just because the title changes from Him to Her (talk about original) and there is a cute girl on the cover instead of a cute guy?

Enjoyed this one!

I was offered a free copy of this book for my honest opinion.
I give this book 4 stars! This book was very sweet. I loved how it developed. This book took me on a journey of how 2 people meet fall in love and then something stupid gets in the way. Do “True Love “ win? You’ll have to read it to find out.

Young Adult Love Story

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Cute, tame, unrealistic love story. I like my stories more complex, less predictable, and with a lot more sizzle.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I liked the story line and the narration was perfect, but it was a bit slow at some parts..... The hot scenes could have been a little bit more detailed......

High School Romance that Never Fades

The book is in dual viewpoints and spans senior year and then a gap of 7 years. It shows how a misunderstanding and rash decisions can lead to dyer circumstances and lost time. Both books in this duology are great reads. Enjoy

Nope

This was a love story that jumps between present and the past. This is also a love story that does revolve around miscommunication. It was a sweet story, but there was just too much that was driving me crazy. It has been seven years since Sarah and Will have seen each other. I found it odd that Will is best friends with her brother and was around her family all these years, but Sarah had no idea. Her family has no clue what happened between the two and she just disappeared. It would have been ok if they were around people they were not close too, but this was her family (including the brother who she was really close with as a teen). It just annoyed me. Sarah was very unlikeable to me. She was stuck in her past and held onto high school way too much. I found myself rolling my eyes so many times. This one just did not work for me. Will bit his lower lip so many times that again I found myself rolling my eyes and annoyed. I only finished since I was flying through it.

Him and Her

First - the narrator.
Ms. Rivers has a pleasant female voice and is very good when it comes to the male roles. There is a definite lower, almost smokey sound to Will. I enjoyed listening to her many voices.
Now to the story itself.
I was on the verge of wanting to find the gas pedal to this book; it moved soooo slowwww. To the point it became boring real quick, to much repeat of each scenario.
There was also the fact that too many of the secondary characters were under developed such as Sawyer, Will’s ex girlfriend, the 2 guys in Denver. etc.
The reader never found out much about their background, just basic superficial stuff.
Then there is Vanessa, the rich high school girl that shows Sarah a text sent from Will’s phone saying he was going to break up with Sarah and get back together with her.
A text from his phone, that was never discussed again. Who go ahold of his phone?, who sent the text?
Add seven years and Sarah just happened to see Vanessa working the service desk at a store while shopping for her brother’s wedding gift. Really?
Sarah was the typical immature 18 year old, runs away from problems, doesn’t address issues, relationships, etc. It was hard to believe she ran a company that aided companies with financial assistance in filling out paper work, setting up benefit plans, that she definitely would need very good communication skills, but dodged Will at every turn to discuss “the why”. Mature much???
This had potential, but unfortunately I felt like there was 50 miles to travel but only enough gas in the car to make it half way.

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not

Carey Heywood was a new author for me. Him and Her had been sitting in my Audible library untouched for a while. I needed sometime new so settled on Him and it was delightful. The writing is good and the narration was perfect for the story. The story begins with Sarah, Miller Light, Miller and Will, her one. It is definitely a coming of age story with lots of teenage angst. He is the most popular boy in school and she is a bit of a wallflower, they have been best friends since they were children. They have secretly loved each other since day one. The book is full of misunderstandings and lies as many romance novels are. Over the course of the story both Sarah and Will grow up, become decent humans and gain success in their careers. The characters are strong and interesting. The secondary characters are well written and add much to the main characters lives and stories. The women are a little bit stereotypical in the high school era but less so as they grew up. Now a word about the narration. In book one Lucy Rivers shines giving each character a distinct voice that matures as the characters become adults. I am late to the game with this author but plan to read more of her work. She has too few books in audiobook format and I hope more of her work is recorded over time.
