Publisher's summary

Bostonian Maura is beginning to feel settled in her new Irish home, just in time for summer tourist season to bring fresh business to her pub. But the first traveler to arrive is thirsty for more than just a pint of Guinness. Althea Melville is hot on the trail of a long-lost Van Dyck painting. Maura agrees to help Althea meet with the residents at the local manor house, the most likely location of the missing art. But when the manor's gardener is found murdered, Maura wonders what Althea's real motives are. Now, to solve the secret of the lost portrait and catch a killer, Maura will have to practice her Irish gift of gab and hunt down some local history-before someone else is out of the picture...

Plot that moves fast

The plot was well written and moved quickly. The characters and local color were enjoyable
The Boston accent on the main character was atrocious. I like the series but think I’ll read rather then listen to the next one

Another great listen

I liked this book as much, if not more than Sheila Connelly's first County Cork Mystery. The narration is very good and the story was interesting. I only gave the story four stars because of the repetition, but it's still worth purchasing. I just bought the third in the series and am anxious to start listening.

Love these unique mysteries set in rural Ireland

Ms Connolly surely has come up with a different locale, interesting folks and a heroine that is a delight. Please keep them coming!

Accents

The accents were horrible, the last two books are great but the reader hurts my ears to listen to.

This is a great series

I really enjoyed listening to this book. Shiela Connolly has a talent for blending the past and present together without being confusing or uninteresting. The pace is good and the characters are developing realistically. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

I really like this series

Everything good about this one. I love the accents and the descriptions of the places. I really like how Maura has matured since she arrived in Ireland. The mystery was good and the characters even better.

A Gentler World

From time to time when I want a break from the harshness of the "real world" I listen to the next book in this series. Reading these stories reminds me that human beings can be kind and sensible. When I finish the books I feel hopeful, in spite of the discouraging events that are reported in the news.

I like Maura Donovan, the main character in this series. She is a down to earth young woman whose life has changed drastically, and for the better. She has moved from South Boston to a very small village in Ireland. That story is told in the first book of the series. I would strongly recommend reading this series in order. Maura is intelligent and resourceful.

The pace of these stories is moderate, but steady. There is an interesting cast of characters. There is no graphic language, sex or violence. The mystery is of more of a puzzle than a "who dunit".

Narrator Amy Rubinate is excellent. I am from the north central United States, so I have no idea if the accents are "accurate". And I've never been to Ireland. What is important to me is that I could easily understand every word that was said, and I could picture the locations in my mind.

This has become one of my favorite "cozy" series. I intend to listen to all the books in this series.
