Publisher's summary

"It began as a mistake." By middle age, Henry Chinaski has lost more than 12 years of his life to the U.S. Postal Service. In a world where his three true, bitter pleasures are women, booze, and racetrack betting, he somehow drags his hangover out of bed every dawn to lug waterlogged mailbags up mud-soaked mountains, outsmart vicious guard dogs, and pray to survive the day-to-day trials of sadistic bosses and certifiable coworkers. This classic 1971 novel - the one that catapulted its author to national fame - is the perfect introduction to the grimly hysterical world of legendary writer, poet, and Dirty Old Man Charles Bukowski and his fictional alter ego, Chinaski.

Fantastic Reading

I really like this book, but I'm leaving a review for the fantastic reading by Christian Baskous. This is a case of the reader adding a lot to the book.

well written

Mark Manson was right. I feel gross but that's exactly what Bulowski wanted. the story is well written and makes me feel how both shallow and deep he was in his lifetime.

this is Bukowski, he isn't an easy read... he is crass, he is Rude, he just might be the dirtiest old man. But , GD it if he isn't just a great Writer... I its your first Bukowski Novel..... Don't Judge the man's Writing 'Cause your offended.... judge the writing by how well its done..... Thanks, Chuck

Fun Mundanity

I was not expecting to be sucked in so easy into Hanks life, his excessive drinking, working and women was quite fun to hear, however strange it may be!!

Chilling

I got the feeling this book is all true, which is absolutely chilling.
Such a great, perfect, reader for this book. Both his voice and tone of voice match the story and make it a living entity.

Blunt and funny life story

The narrator gave a perfect performance for the material. The adult situations and comical nonchalant reactions from the main character in the novel lend the novel appeal for the immature or jaded. My favorite parts consisted of the Joyce relationship story arc and his first stint in the post office. I cannot recommend the novel to a younger or squeamish audience. Enjoyed it from start to finish.

A Must Listen Audiobook!

Christian Baskous is spot-on as a. Bukoski impersonator narrating this account of the author's life.
