Publisher's summary

Unsurpassed for their unique blend of nonstop action, daring ideas, and extensive world-building, the Foundation novels of Isaac Asimov are one of the great masterworks of science fiction. With extraordinary vision, they chronicle the struggle of a courageous group of men and women devoted to safeguarding humanity against an unyielding deluge of barbarism and warfare.

At last, the costly and bitter war between the two Foundations has come to an end. The scientists of the First Foundation have proved victorious; and now they return to Hari Seldon's long-established plan to build a new Empire on the ruins of the old. But rumors persist that the Second Foundation is not destroyed after all - and that its still-defiant survivors are preparing their revenge.

Now two exiled citizens of the Foundation - a renegade Councilman and a doddering historian-set out in search of the mythical planet Earth.... and proof that the Second Foundation still exists.

Meanwhile, someone - or something - outside of both Foundations seems to be orchestrating events to suit its own ominous purpose. Soon representatives of both the First and Second Foundations will find themselves racing toward a mysterious world called Gaia and a final, shocking destiny at the very end of the universe!

Best of the series so far

Having already listened to the original trilogy, I can appreciate why the series is so popular and the works overall heralded for their greatness and impact on science fiction and society.

I feel that this book exceeds the original trilogy, and hits even closer to modern times with its themes and plot points. The fundamental decision at the end of the novel is one that reaches far beyond the pages of the book, and touches on the meaning of our existence itself.

I can't wait to continue the story! It is a shame it ends after the next book, before reaching the allotted 1,000 years of the Seldon Plan

Best one yet

This is a triumph of the Foundation series. After a few weaker volumes, I am finally happy to have stuck with it. This story starts to tie up the series. I look forward to finishing the next story.

Enjoyed it as much as the original trilogy

I was worried to listen to this book, realizing it was written like 30 years after the first 3. But if I had not known that fact before hand, I would have never guessed it. The book doesn't miss a beat and feels consistent with the previous 3. I really enjoyed it. It was as good as the originals and in some ways better. The narrgator is top notch. It's a good mystery and kept me totally engaged. I was a little disappointed how it ended. Not that it was poorly done. It just sort of waterdowns the importance of the 2 foundations. But it was still interesting and well done. Looking forward to the next book. Sadly, it has a different narrator.

Foundation books as a group are outstanding

Would you consider the audio edition of Foundation's Edge to be better than the print version?

No. Reading lets the mind run wild where audio tells delivers the book in a way that lets you enjoy the book but as the reader tells it.

well done...wish scott did the final book also

This was a good listen...too bad the next book in the series: 'foundation and earth'- it was great book---the climax the foundation series...but what a brutal listen. Scott Brick did a fine job with other foundation books, and he should've did the final book also.

I have listened to much of the Dune series also...all very good esp 'Dune.'
Scott Brick did much of it also, and was good. Simon Vance as the narrator in 'Dune' is a real treat-- he is probably one of my favorites...in any of his narrations.

Perhaps the best characters yet!

I steamrolled through the original trilogy and the two sequels without a break so its all still fresh in my mind. The two sequels were written much later than the original trilogy and it shows, for better or worse. The way this story unfolds, you get a lot more time with the same characters than you do in any part of the original trilogy. This really helped me to become more interested and invested in them. The plot itself flowed seamlessly from the original trilogy for the majority of the story while challenging some of its established assumptions and themes toward the end. Overall I really enjoyed it, I have my issues with where this set up the next story in its final moments, but I have to give it 5 stars overall.

It was great to have Scott Brick as the reader, I wish he also did the last book.

My all time favourite Sci Fi Novel

Love this book and the narration is good.

The plot is on a massive scale - the destiny of the entire galixy and the dramatic peak is unparalleled.

Highly recommended.

Worth a listen

An enjoyable addition to the saga with interesting departures from the original trilogy. Worth a listen. I particularly enjoyed the uptick in female characters.

Tie-ins

While staying true to the Foundation trilogy this has the added benefit of tying in some of Asimov's other books. Just great!
