“A lively outing, complete with sly shout-outs to Jane Austen and gritty police procedurals.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

In Terry Pratchett’s delightful New York Times bestselling tale of crime, class, prejudice, and punishment, Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is on vacation. But this is Discworld, where nothing goes as planned—and hilarious adventure ensues.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse.

At long last, Lady Sybil has lured her husband, Sam Vimes, on a well-deserved and long-overdue holiday. But for the commander of the City Watch, a vacation in the country is anything but relaxing. The balls, the teas, the muck—not to mention all that fresh air and birdsong—are more than a bit taxing on a cynical city-born and -bred copper.

The policeman is back on familiar ground when a body is found—the first of many, many corpses—and an ancient crime more terrible than murder is uncovered. Out of his jurisdiction, out of his element, and out of bacon sandwiches (thanks to his well-meaning wife)—Sam must rely on his copper’s instincts, guile, and Ankh-Morpork street smarts to see justice done.

As he sets off on the chase, though, he must remember to watch where he steps. . . . This is the countryside, after all, and the streets most definitely are not paved with gold.

The Discworld novels can be read in any order, but Snuff is the 8th book in the City Watch collection and the 39th Discworld book.

  • Feet of Clay

This was a little slow moving at the beginning, but it turned into an exhilarating adventure. I really love that you can listen to any of the Discworld books independently in any order. I can't recommend this book or any of the Discworld series highly enough!

Another excellent story from Terry Pratchett

When did Vimes become all-knowing? In many ways, this is classic Pratchett: taking on a serious social issue in an amusing, intelligent and amusing amusing amusing way. However, Vimes has somehow become an uber-cop. Just as Vetinari always knows what's going on and who's doing what, somehow Vimes has become so as well, but really, does the Disc need more than one omniscient being? I liked Vimes originally, because of his humanity, because he was a flawed man trying to do right. In this book, I found him a little cardboard. That being said, it's still Pratchett, so still a great book. And it's not like anything I say would deter a Pratchett fan, anyway. ;)

Not his best, but that's still better than most

Stephen Briggs and Terry Pratchett seem to do no wrong. Every performance whisks you back into the diskworld, and this book is no different. Vimes is my favourite character amongst Pratchett's array, so this book had me a little more excited (and expectant) than his other plotlines.
Fear not. It's a fantastic story. I sincerely hope this isn't the last time I read about the city watch. Get it *now*

Once again, a fantastic story and performance

The story had hilairous quips, innuendos and fantastic wit. The reader is most excellent!
If you like whimsical mysteries...you will enjoy this one. Well done.

British Humor at it's finest!

This was my first Discworld book (and it won't be the last). The best part is the performance -- Stephen Briggs does an awesome job of portraying the numerous very vivid, very quirky characters in this book. The result is a bit like a Harry Potter book, except for adults. Pratchett's story is a bit thin, but his characters and situations are beautifully done -- comedy, suspense, action, it's great. A whole lot of fun, I highly recommend it for anyone who likes fantasy fiction and dry British humor.

Great Performance!
