One Summer by bestselling author, David Baldacci, is a tender and absorbing portrait of a family rebuilding itself after being torn apart by grief.

When thirty-four-year-old ex-war veteran Jack Armstrong is told he has only weeks to live, his first concern is for his beloved wife Lizzie, and their children: baby Jackie, twelve-year-old would-be actor Cory and rebellious teenage daughter Mikki. It seems so cruel that an apparently fatal illness should claim him, a survivor of Afghanistan and Iraq, when he still has so much left to live for.

On Christmas Eve, as Jack prepares to say goodbye to his family, unthinkable tragedy strikes again and Lizzie is killed in a car accident. Just when Jack thought living was far harder than dying, and the children's future looked so bleak, something remarkable happens which gives Jack the valuable second chance he'd only dreamed of.

Unexpectedly, the family inherits Lizzie's beautiful childhood home on the oceanfront in South Carolina. During one unforgettable summer Jack and the children struggle to rebuild their lives. They learn to live again – and to love again. And they learn the biggest lesson of all – the importance of family.

Where does One Summer rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

It was one of the greatest books in my Audible experience. It was kinda weird since it seemed a Nicholas Sparks book but it seems that Baldacci is a versatile author that can change from Grisham mode to Sparks mode.

What did you like best about this story?

This is a story about values and a very good one.

Which character ??? as performed by Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ??? was your favorite?

Michelle was a very good portrait of a teenage that had a good education. Sam provided some comic relief for the history

Who was the most memorable character of One Summer and why?

But definitely the most memorable character of One Sumer is Jack Armstrong and his letters

Any additional comments?

Very worth reading

David Baldacci in Nicholas Sparks' style

A really good storyline... Never believe what you see, you may be seeing what you want to see... Not what really is the truth!

Unexpected.. and beautiful

This story tugged at my heart strings the whole way through. It started from such a sad, unjust place but finished by lifting you up.

Another great Baldacci book

Would you listen to One Summer again? Why?

Yes. This is a very touching story of how illness affects so many people and shows the motives and reactions of each one.

What other book might you compare One Summer to and why?

Jodi Picoult's - Plain Truth. Stories of misunderstanding and fighting to be recognised as having valid reactions to extreme situations.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Jack was left in the hospice then later the mother in law trying for the children again. Very moving and upsetting.

Any additional comments?

Found the male narrotator not so clear and didn't need two narrotators. I'd keep wondering if they were going to hit the cues at the right time!

Loyalty in love
