Audible Editor Reviews

Will Grayon, Will Grayson, is the story of two teenagers — both named Will Grayson — and the long list of coincidences that ends with their random meeting in an adult video store (where neither of them are actually shopping). in the text version, the two Wills are distinguished in several ways: The first Will — the one written by John Green and narrated by Nick Podehl — chimes in for the odd-numbered chapters and gets his name capitalized, while the second, written by David Levithan and read by MacLeod Andrews, takes over the even-numbered chapters and goes by the more idiosyncratic will grayson (all lowercase). Since both characters are written in first person, it’s up to Podehl and Andrews to make the distinction clear in the audio version, and they do it well: Podehl’s Will is a teen who’s made a point of not getting too involved with anything or anyone, and the narrator balances the guarded tones of Will’s speaking voice with the less-controlled run of his thoughts, while Andrews gives his will a fast-paced, sarcastic tone that matches the character’s typical teenage cynicism.

While the story builds to the chance meeting between the Wills, the narrators take on a lineup of secondary characters: parents, girlfriends, boyfriends, and one large boy named Tiny Cooper who ties them all together. Podehl has more to work with in his chapters, bringing Will, Tiny, and their friends to life; much of Andrews’ time is spent reading online chats and back and forth dialogue that will prefaces with “me:” and “her:” or “him:” so he has fewer opportunities to develop those voices. But both narrators infuse their readings with the emotions, attitudes, and sentiments that will be familiar to anyone who knows (or was) a teenager. —Blythe Copeland

Publisher's Summary

One cold night, in a most unlikely corner of Chicago, two teens—both named Will Grayson—are about to cross paths. As their worlds collide and intertwine, the Will Graysons find their lives going in new and unexpected directions, building toward romantic turns-of-heart and the epic production of history’s most fabulous high school musical.

Hilarious, poignant, and deeply insightful, John Green and David Levithan’s collaborative novel is brimming with a double helping of the heart and humor that have won both them legions of faithful fans.

    "Warm Fuzzies..."

This is a story about two teenage boys both named Will Grayson, who end up meeting by chance and change their lives. It's about high school, being gay, teen angst, first relationships, failed relationships, family, and most of all friendship. It might not sound like this has something for everyone, but I'm a 30-year old woman and I adored it. Once you get past the somewhat whiny beginning (but not for long- like ten minutes) it begins touching on all the places young people are feeling, and reminding everyone else of how they used to feel. I believe there is a character or at least a scene, that everyone can relate to in some way, and that makes you care about this story and its characters. You begin to badly want them to grow up and get what they want, and although their dreams do not all come true, the end is satisfying. I wouldn't say leave this one to the teens- just try it. It's also hilarious! I laughed out loud too many times to count.

    "So good!"

I loved this book! The two distinct writing styles of the two very different Will Graysons (and the two very different narrators) are what make the book. It is laugh out loud funny and the voices of all the characters are perfect. (The gay friend, Tiny, is absolutely delightful to listen to.) I recommend this book, and I recommend it even more on Audiobook, as listening to it really brings the characters to life.

I loved this book! The story was fresh and funny, and I often found myself giggling while listening to it! The narrators are perfect for the story and I appreciated all of the theatrics of their voices. I'd highly recommend this one for people looking for something fun to listen to.

    "Refreshing and Funny"

I listened to this book based on the ratings and it did not disappoint. This was a very funny, refreshing and interesting book that really captures teen angst. I'm not sure I agree that it's appropriate for teenagers. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is that some musical "numbers" that are relevant to one of the characters kind of drone on. But the story is fantastic and the narrators were terrific.

"I actually fell in love with this one!"

Sometimes I don't want to waste my credit on a relatively short book like this one (7hrs 52m). But this was SO worth it! The story is sweet, characters are vivid and remind me of people I know in real life. They don't seem contrived in any way. I laughed out loud many times- the narrators are great! I am so happy that I invested my credit and listening time in this one!

"One of the best performances I've listened to"

This is a cleverly written book, and the readers are outstanding. I wish Tiny's musical were real so I could see it now that I've heard some of the songs. The book looks at the problems of love and friendship in a high school setting. However I have to warn conservative readers that one of the book's threads is about homosexual love. It's tastefully done, but it's there. If that's going to bother you, read one of the authors' other books.

    "I appreciate you Tiny Cooper!"

I can't even think of what to say that would be worthy enough for this book. It was amazing. It's funny, sad, and thought-provoking. A true to life coming of age tale about learning to be happy with who you are. If you want to discover a little about yourself and your relationships with the people around you or just want to laugh out loud then have a go.

"This Is An Adult Book, Sold in the YA section. FYI"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

It wasn't so much the book, as the graphic nature it entailed, I know that because the characters in the book are suppose to be in High School, that this book is sold and marketed in the Young Adult section. But believe me, this is an Adult Book, with Adult Themes and Adult Sex.

What was most disappointing about John Green and David Levithan ’s story?

The story was fine. I just wasn't prepared for it. You have to understand that I thought I was about listen to a Young Adult Novel about two boys that just happen to have the same name.

How could the performance have been better?

The performances were wonderful. Both Narrators are seasoned professionals.

    Any additional comments?

This book is for ADULTS. If it were a movie, it would be rated R. Parents should listen to audio book before you let you're child. Which is a good idea no matter what book it is. :)

    "Another John Green Hit"

John Green writes interesting, funny, flawed teen characters in fantastical, yet simple situations. This book takes on two different boys sharing the name, Will Grayson. With humor and wit, Green writes of falling in love; being gay; and learning to appreciate & celebrate friendships. I really enjoyed this listen and recommend this as a solid young adult crossover for us older folks. If you liked this book and his writing style, dont miss Fault in Our Stars.

"Allow me to SING its praise!"

This is one of the best and funniest books I have experienced in a long time. It was a lot of fun to litsen to and now I cannot imagine it in any other form. I am recommending it to everyone I know! It is a wonderfully modern story about growing up and learning to be comfortable in your own skin. It is a teenage story in the young adult genre but I am 23 (some-what young adult) and still found it charming and relevant. It is also hilarious! I listened to the majority of it on my ipod at work and had to keep myself from bursting into laughter in the middle of the office on several occassions. Give it a try! It is completely worth it!
