The News from Lake Wobegon, 1-Month Subscription

As a consumer, I agree that the whole show is the prefered format - who wouldn't like to hear everything while out on a walk? But as an employee, I'm sorry to say we can't make all the content available via Audible b/c we have not been given the rights to do so from the other guests/musicians.

As great as Keillor's stories are--and they are classics, our Twain--they are less than perfect without the entire show as context. Why can't MPR give us the entire PHC program?

The first thing I ever did when I met my wife for the first time, was to share my whole ENTIRE CD collection of these Lake Wobegon Monologues with her father. Shortly after that we were married :)
I am rather dissapointed that I was charged a WHOLE Subscription credit for 15 minutes. I would be glad to get 4 for one credit, or even three, but ONE 15 minute session is unacceptable.

If you are not familiar with this show, listen to it on NPR before you purchase thins subscription. It is an old-time style of humor that will not appeal to everyone. I enjoy the entire show and wished Audible would offer it.

This is a great periodical. I would say that 1 out of every 4 stories is not so well-done, but try coming up with a consistently funny 15-20 minute monologue every week... not easy. If you haven't read "Lake Wobegon Days", do. It's brilliant. It will give you an appreciation for these small stories. Keillor is masterful at weaving humor into stories that also have great pathos, emotion, and that special melancholy that you only find in Lake Wobegon. His delivery is practised and half the joy in listening is experiencing how he breathes into the microphone, gets closer and farther away from it to accent intimacy or narration, and manipulates the live audience for a big laugh. Sometimes the lengths of the subscription can vary to as little as 12 minutes an episode, but I've often found that the short ones are especially funny -- they have been constructed more thoughtfully. These are meditations on the parts of life that aren't so newsworthy, except if you live in Lake Wobegon.

If you love storytellers, you will love "The News from Lake Wobegon." The stories run the gamut of hilarious to heart wrenching. Garrison Keillor is a good companion for a long driving trip.

This has always been one of my favorites. I've been using Audible.com for well over a year now, and although I sometimes take a break from this particular series, I find myself coming back to it again and again. These little stories are short and sweet, but always entertaining. The short duration is perfect when you want something light-hearted and refreshing. It makes me want to move to a little town!

I love listening to The News From Lake Wobegone. It reminds me so much of my own childhood and of simpler times. A wonderful listen for in front of the fireplace.

...complete broadcasts, like the recent pre-election joke show?

I have to weigh in with the people who are wishing for the whole thing. PHC is an eclectic mix, and really comes together as a whole. The news alone may be nice, but not enough to pay for. It's like saying that listening to the last 20 minutes really gives you the essence of PHC. Hardly true. I recognize the rights issue, and that it's not practical to negotiate for every show. But clearly, there are shows that would generate enough interest that all the artists should welcome such promotional exposure and readily agree (someone else made that point in an earlier post).

I enjoyed the stories (simple, touching stories), but was very disappointed at the length of the listens (sometimes not lasting more than 20 mins). I also think the audience for this subscription targets a bit of an older crowd. I prefer This American Life instead.
