"Rounded out by a host of lively characters, this is a memorable tale." (Publishers Weekly)
"A gripping mystery as well as a look into the London of gas lights and foggy nights." (School Library Journal)
"Perry gets the Victorian mood just right....Settle in with this one on a rainy day." (Booklist)
"Incredible Reader!"
Davina Porter leads the reader directly into the Victorian world with her actress's ability to become both male and female characters with convincing and consistent characterizations. I could almost SEE them as she gave them voice...I will look for her audiobooks in the future with delight and anticipation! Of course, I also love Anne Perry's work.
I am a retired Court Reporter and I LOVE books. All kinds of books but my favorites are mysteries and period books. I like civil war books and some biographies.
"Highgate Rise"
I enjoyed this book so much. I love the Victorian times and this is really well done. I would recomend this to anyone who likes mysteries.
"Great reader, good characters, slow moving"
This book is talky and slow moving, but the spectacular narration and well-crafted characters help make up for it. Nicely written and a great portrait of the period, and it takes on interesting social and political issues. The writing style is unobtrusive, which makes for smooth reading. I wouldn't have minded a bit more intrigue, and I found the end a bit weak.
"Waye too slow"
Such a slow, plodding progression. I suspect that most detective and police work is just that, tedious and boring. But I don't want to listen to boring.
"An intriguing story!"
Ann Perry makes the story come alive in that time era with such well developed characters. Always guessing about "who done it" and could not figure it out until the end, a great mystery !
