A war hero and a recluse, Rex de Warenne has long admired Lady Blanche. Though fate and his own dark nature have robbed him of any hope for the kind of future such a lady deserves, Rex is determined to aid her - and keep his feelings to himself. But when their growing friendship leads to a night of shocking passion, Blanche's newfound memories threaten their fragile love, and Blanche's very life.

"Very irritating, but great sex scenes"
I agree this was not a strong literary novel. Both the language used and references made seemed very post 1820's at times, which made the main characters' insistence that servants be respectful of "their betters" all the more jarring, especially for one character who was supposed to be the "kindest person in the world." But my real problem was with the main female character who, while being described in glowing terms as kind, generous, and sensitive, was willing to put the man she loved through hell, treating him in ways that she knew, through his revelations to her, would hurt him the most and the deepest. I found myself yelling at at my CD player more than once, and applauding the one time he responded back to her with true anger. I really wanted to shake her. Having said that, the sex scenes were absolutely wonderful. It was just very hard to believe that she would continue to act the way she did after the extreme closeness they shared during them, her little secret aside.
The reader's style was also a little hard to take at first. Reading "Oh, pardon me!" and "she cried" as two separate sentences was a jolt each time she did it. But as time went on, she did much better.
"great listening experience"
I just loved this story and the reader did a fine job. Flawed characters are always so much more interesting to me, and the hero and heroine in this story both have significant personal obstacles to overcome. I'm listening to this one again - well done.
"brenda joyce"
i really like her books. this one is really good.
"Good Historical!"
This book was your typical historical romance, however, the story line was different and interesting. I liked the hero and heroine a lot. Good listen!
I read so I can write
"Loved Sir Rex but Blanche is a little dumb"
This actually another book in the series about the family in A Lady at Last. Sir Rex is a strong character that one can really like. Blanche (in my personal opinion) was a little dumb and cowardly but finally tells Sir Rex and the end story finally ends well.
"Loved IT :)"
Brenda Joyce is a wonderful writer and paints a picture that will bring you into the story. Loved the book
"Thesaurus"
I suggest the author get an imagination and a thesaurus. She used the words impossible, thud, and shocking in one form or another more than I have heard in my thirty-two years of life. Please, let readers know this is NOT a literary experience. If you want to half listen, it might work for you to read this author. I sincerely hope this author has better work. Not only is this piece literarily inept, the author is a social snob and non-respecter of the common person if her work and characters are any indication. In a word, this work is nauseating. I only finished reading this trite work because I paid for it. I suggest Audible solicit the works of writers with some literary ability. 99% disappointing.
Audio-fiction ADDICT !
"A bit dull !"
I wanted to try a different author . So I picked Brenda. And picked this book former as I am a huge fan of historical romance. I was so disappointed with this book ! So dull , slow, un-interesting story ! I got a really bad impression of the author and I am less likely to read for her again !
"Stilted and boring"
I found the dialogue to be awfully stilted and unnatural. The narrator didn't help. She could have at least added some excitement, but there was nothing. I felt that there was much more that could be done with the plot. I kept waiting for it to improve, it didn't.
I am a huge fan of romances and happy endings. I like books that take me away from everyday life and into the land of romance, some adventure and of course happy endings.
"I Enjoyed It!"
I have read a number of negative reviews on this book so I was reluctant to buy it. I was happy to see Blanche and Rex finally together and was pleased to be a part of another Dewarenne family saga.
