It's the classic adventure of a madman: the "renowned Don Quixote de la Mancha". He attacks windmills, believes a peasant girl to be a lady, and fancies that he is a knight-errant, dedicated to righting wrongs and rescuing damsels in distress.

Don Quixote is a middle-aged gentleman from the region of La Mancha in central Spain. Obsessed with the chivalrous ideals touted in the many books he has read, he decides to take up his lance and sword to defend the helpless and destroy the wicked. After a first failed adventure, he sets out on a second one with a somewhat befuddled laborer named Sancho Panza, whom he has persuaded to accompany him.

In many works, the experiences of a man like Don Quixote would probably appear tragic. He's repeatedly beaten, chased away, lied to, and misunderstood. But in the hands of Cervantes, these events are comic.

I found it difficult to appreciate this classic but the performance makes it worth listening to and definitely better than reading the book. Voices of Quixote and sancho ponza excellent - one of the best narrations I've heard

Maybe because of the current climate or maybe it’s cause I’m Mexican but I didn’t find Don Quixote as lovable as I thought I was gonna. An old fool who wants to make things great again. Sounds bad to me. Also it was very interesting to see a satire of a culture long gone

Probably not. It is VERY long.

His voice renderings were brilliant and fully captured the personalities of each character. He must be a wonderful actor.

This story could never be made into a movie that would do it justice.

I started listening to this as a "labor of love." I ended up looking forward to every minute of it and am sorry it is over.

it was important of me to listen to this because it's used as a declaration of character in a lot of the fiction I love. The Newsroom and the Expanse both use this as a symbol of a man's desire for justice.

however that's not what I see from it. I find Don Quixote to be a little arrogant, Sancho is racist. just racist. like really racist. (he calls himself an enemy of the Jews, and then there is this entire passage of him thinking about being made a king and selling the black subjects off as slaves) I get that this book is a product of a different time but that's a lot. And Quixote is just blind to it.

I either don't understand the work and this is additional commentary on the world or this book may not be all that has been made out to be. it's a classic so maybe people should make up their own minds but I'm not sure I'll finish it.

on the plus side I have come to an epiphany by listening. an enlightened being doesn't need to innately see the right path, but when they are shown the way their mind should be open to it.

the story itself is pretty good well written and the voice actor is fine.

Dox Quixote is the book that answers the question "what book would you take if stranded on an island". It is a masterpiece of literature, one of the last great epics.

I'm glad I finally got around to reading this masterpiece. I'm not sure what I expected, but it isn't quite what I thought it would be. It is charming and full of surprises. It is actually a collection of stories told by various characters that Don Quixote meets on his journey of being a Knight Errant. He is as interesting a character as you are likely to find in literature of the time, or even since it was written back in 1605. I must add that the ending took me by surprise. I admit I wanted it to end differently, but really, how could it?

I have a version that is partly in Spanish that I am now eager to read. I think I can handle it.

I know narrator David Case (aka Frederick Davidson) is considered to be an acquired taste, but really, they just don't get any better than he is. His characterizations are without equal. If you haven't "acquired the taste," maybe now is the time to give him a try. This book would be a good place to start.

Absolutely delightful. Had always pushed it to the back of the list, but finally did it and most glad that I did. You will become quite attached to Don Quixote and Sancho. Was very sad when I finished it. I'll return to it again in future years.
David Case is the best reader I've heard. In essence, alone he is a full cast dramatization. Enjoyed his work previously in the Flashman series, in which he is perfect.

Genius. Put it off no longer, it's a classic for a reason.

I enjoyed listening to this audiobook and will miss it when I have finished. The reader does take some getting use to; however, he has to perform several characters and maintain their voice through 30 plus hours. I especially like the voices used for both Don Quioxote's and Sancho Panza his squire. This is a master piece. Remember this story appeared in the 1600. I am amazed how many of the tales can be applied to people's behavior and reactions of the day. I am also amazed at the number of cliches and I often wonder if these were the first printing of something like "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" or if in translation, this cliche was updated into a common english version. This is not for the faint hearted listener, and does take some getting used to. I listen about an hour a day, going to and from work. Takes my mind off of my day, and reflect on what will be next adventure of Don Quixote and his loyal squire Sancho Panza.

even though at times it felt like a marathon to make it through the 140ish chapters, it was well worth it. easy to follow and glad i got this book
