Publisher's Summary

The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken heart. Then Gwen's veterinarian called with a story about a three-week-old eyeless kitten who'd been abandoned. It was love at first sight.

Everyone warned that Homer would always be an "underachiever", never as playful or independent as other cats. But the kitten nobody believed in quickly grew into a three-pound dynamo, a tiny daredevil with a giant heart who eagerly made friends with every human who crossed his path. Homer scaled seven-foot bookcases with ease and leapt five feet into the air to catch flies in mid-buzz. He survived being trapped alone for days after 9/11 in an apartment near the World Trade Center, and even saved Gwen's life when he chased off an intruder who broke into their home in the middle of the night.

But it was Homer's unswerving loyalty, his infinite capacity for love, and his joy in the face of all obstacles that inspired Gwen daily and transformed her life. And by the time she met the man she would marry, she realized Homer had taught her the most important lesson of all: Love isn't something you see with your eyes.

Homer's Odyssey is the once-in-a-lifetime story of an extraordinary cat and his human companion. It celebrates the refusal to accept limits on love, ability, or hope against overwhelming odds. By turns jubilant and moving, it's a memoir for anybody who's ever fallen completely and helplessly in love with a pet.

    "Pleasantly surprised"

I gave this one a fourth star because: a) I'm not really a cat person, and b) I feared the book might be too chick-lit-y ... and I ended up really liking it - I've read reviews complaining that it's too much of a Gwen memoir, and not Homer-centered enough, but ... hey ... it's about his effect on her life! Gwen keeps the book moving along well, so that I never really found it got bogged down.
I'm glad I listen to the audio version, though the narrator's voice disconcertingly reminded me of Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone; her (little boy) "Homer" voice took some getting used to, but by the end I realized it was a good fit for his personality. I bailed early on during the final 30 minute "discussion" between Gwen and her husband, feeling their experiences had been covered well enough in the book.

    "Cheers to all kitties"

I really enjoyed this book. I am a catlover, own two cats, and can totally relate to many of the cat antics described throughout the book. I never considered the needs of some special cats and this book has opened my eyes to the many animals that need a good home. Like Gwen, I could not consider having 3 cats, but if a special needs cat like Homer was to come into my path, this book has helped me learn that I too would be able to adopt and love and provide a wonderful loving home for that cat.

Also, ten percent of these purchases are going toward helping other animals in need.

"A Must Read for Cat Lovers"

This was an incredibly heart warming story that kept me glued to my iPod. It's one I will likely read again. Gwen reminds me very much of someone I know quite well ..myself. My special kitty has 3 legs / 2 paws (one leg amputation and one foot amputation) and it's so true that they not only have a way of adapting to limitations, but their sheer determination to do so is inspiring to say the least. Gwen and Homer are fortunate to have found each other and I wish him a long and happy life. I hope she'll write a sequel.

    "Couldn't put it down!"

This was such a good story. The fact that is true made it even better. I had read a review of the book in a recent Newsweek magazine so I knew Homer had survived in an apartment near Ground Zero on 9/11 but to hear the story of it just made my heart go out to everyone who personally went through that day as it happened in New York. I don't believe you have to be a cat lover to throughly enjoy this book. Gwen Cooper is a very good writer!

    "A Must Read!"

I have purchased and read the physical book, the Kindle edition and listened to the Audible edition of this book. I plan on gifting it to several people for Christmas. It is that good! Truly enjoyed the interview with author and husband on Audible edition. The author said that 10% of profits go to varius animal charitie. Please buy this book!

Superb book if you love animals and have cared for your own precious sick cat. Couldn't stop listening till the end. I cried, laughed, and just loved Homer.
