"Good Choice for Narrator"
I really like the Drake Sisters series by Christine Feehan. This story (about eldest sister Sarah Drake) is a good first entry for the series.
It is a bit short, but I believe it (and the second entry featuring Kate Drake) were originally novellas inside anthologies. Plus "Magic in the Wind" costs less than most audiobooks, so that all evens out.
The narrator has a good voice for the narration of Sarah's story. She sounds young and somewhat sweet. That may seem a contradiction when you realize that Sarah is a security expert (supposedly versed in weapons and trained to fight), but the entire tenor of the series hangs on the idea that the Drakes are really kind young women (no matter the flashy careers or flamboyant personas shown to the world). They are the girls next door (who are actually the witches next door, but still the kind of girl your mom wants you to bring home).
It was not a syrupy-sweet reading, please do not mistake me. But it was just as I'd expect Sarah to sound.
This is a refreshing book in that the main male lead doesn't leap in to "save" the woman (even though she is much better trained and better suited to the role than he is). When this couple appears in later issues of this series they seem to be true partners. That is especially refreshing for a Feehan novel.
She has a bad tendancy to make ALL male leads so alpha as to be in serious need of a smack in the head with a heavy object. I like a good alpha hero as much as the next woman, but come ON. Some of her Dark Series "heroes" would end up dead if the heroines were like REAL women.
"So shallow - thought it was abridged"
Sorry, I wanted to like this book. Purchased on sale just for a fun listen. It was so shallow and poorly developed that I thought it was a bad abridgement. The characters are empty, the story is predictable, the dialogue is sometimes painful. It was a good concept and there a few good elements of supernatural in it but it fell flat for me. I will say narrator is good.
"Start of a great series"
If you haven’t met the Drake sisters, this a the first book you'll want to read. Don't be concerned if you can't keep the sisters straight because you will get a chance to know each sister as the series continues. Lot's of magic and mystical happenings set with characters you will enjoy. Be aware that there is graphic (almost pornographic) sex in some of the later books. This one is pretty tame - especially since it is abridged.
I wish that an unabridged version had been an option.
"Love this series"
I have listened to all of the books in the series now. One of my favorite authors.
Believer in what you can't see
"Magic everywhere"
Yes, I love Christine Feehan's books. I love the book version over the audiobook because sometime the voice doesn't match the image I have of the characters.
Practical Magic. It is very whimsical and I love the way the sisters work and love each other.
Sarah of course. She is the magic that starts the series and she's the guiding light to the family.
Yes, but it is always hard to get the right actress because of contracts and other behind the scenes events that affect the results of a movie. I can see Elizabeth Perkins type for Sarah.
"A magical fluff novel for pure enjoyment"
Good story and magical additions.
This author produces enjoyable novels but not a lot of thought provoking after thought.
Almost always better to listen to a book then to read it. You can do other things while listening but not while reading.
I'm an avid reader who is on the road a lot so audible is perfect for working my way through my list of books I want to read!
"It was ok"
I wanted to read this book because I enjoyed the rest of the Drake sisters stories. I'm glad now that I didn't read this book first (even though it was first chronologically) because it was definitely the least interesting of the series. I might have never read the rest of the books if I based my experience off this one.
No, but I was disappointed.
I think the plot was just weak compared to others in the series.
I have an addiction to Audio books. What I can't get at the library, I come to Audible and they are always having a sale. I have way more audiobooks than I could possible listen to in over 3 years, but I can't help but adding to my collection and I read a little of everything but mostly romance and paranormal goodies.
"First in the series."
I have read all the Drake sister stories and feel that this one could have had more potential but since it was a short story to start out with it was okay. Favorites in the series is Dangerous Tides and Turbulent Sea.
Say something about yourself!
"Not that impressed"
Yawn. That is pretty much all I can say, I just barely hung in until the end. I have no desire to buy the others in the series. I have friends who just love this author, but I just couldn't get into the characters. Narrator was okay, but really, I don't think she had that much to work with.
