About this listen

The Kobayashi Maru is the test given to cadets at the Starfleet Academy - a simulated no-win situation in space. For James Kirk it was a challenge that defined him as a leader. For Chekov it meant a struggle against his own personality. For Sulu and Scotty it was a matter of the spirit and a second chance...Now, the Starfleet officers look back on those youthful days. Their shuttlecraft is drifting helplessly in space. Sharing with each other the painful, often fierce lessons of their Kobayashi Maru, each man struggles to tap his inner strength and to overcome the most desperate situation of their careers!

The Kobayashi Maru

This is a really fun story. I love the old abridged Star Trek books. With the music and James Doohan’s narration it’s like listening to an excellent episode of OT.

For best listening use headphones for all of the old Star Trek audiobooks. The difference is astounding.

Great story, kind of short for the cost

This is a really good story and expertly read, but for one credit, I would say it was a bit short for the price

A damn good book.

I loved how the author kept the characters true to how we have come to know und love them. Especially when Scotty debated with himself about what to do about a malfunctioning computer terminal. It always reminds me of when he threatened to reprogram another computer into a food synthesizer.

Too much was cut

Too much was cut. I remember reading the book as a kid and this is missing a lot of story. like how thet tried using their personal suits jet packs to propel the shuttle, etc.

Not an Unabridged Book: Disappointing

I suppose it is my own fault that I didn't notice how short the performance was before buying it, but I was excited to see this book listed under the Unabridged Book section and I was VERY disappointed to find it was not actually Unabridged at all. I assume that the "Adapted" wording in the title is how they get away with that? Buyer Beware.

James Doohan was a great performer, but the truncated stories were pretty disappointing when I was hoping for the full stories that I vaguely recalled from when I read this book years ago. The abridging leaves the characters making poorly explained decisions that don't make sense without further context.

A chance to hear Scotty again (James Doohan)

It was wonderful to hear James Doohan once again. The story was too short but worth it.

C'mon, it's Jimmy Doohan!

I took off two full stars for the 'Story' specific rating, just because this recording is an abridgment of the novel. However, I was willing to purchase it anyway because, well, James Doohan of course!

He's wonderful, as always, and though I think the now tried-and-true Trek voice actor Robert Petkoff does some better impressions of certain cast members than Doohan, there's just no getting around how talented and emotional this reading is!

It's a great story and James Doohan brings it to life just a shame he is gone but not or ever will be forgotten
