About this listen

Ex-confederate army captain John Carter finds himself unwittingly transported to Mars, while fleeing Apache Indians. This new world is populated by a race of monstrous Martians, whose culture is based on the ability to fight for their race. Fortunately for John, the gravitational difference between Mars and Earth has endowed him with the strength that he will need for survival on this hostile planet. John Carter battles ferocious Martian creatures, but gains the respect and friendship of the Barsoomians. He also encounters the beautiful Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium, and earns her everlasting devotion.

The first in Burroughs' 11-volume series of the adventures of John Carter. The Mars series is a blend of sci-fi and romantic adventure - and The Princess of Mars was Burroughs' first published work.

Editorial reviews

A century after its serial publication in a magazine, this novel has found new popularity with the film "John Carter." Narrator Scott Brick brings to the production a wealth of experience with science fiction tales that have long explicatory passages and many battles. As the first-person narrator to whom John Carter told his story, Brick recounts the adventures of the hero, who starts out as a prospector in Arizona. When John Carter is pursued by Apaches, he takes refuge in a cave, is overcome by a gas, and wakes up on Mars. Once there, he becomes one of the green Martian horde, falls in love with a princess, and hurls himself from one exploit to another. Brick's introspective delivery adds dimension to this popular example of interplanetary pulp fiction.

i can't express how thrilled i was to find erb's martian series available on audio. i first became familiar with john carter when i was 15 (1966). i devoured every book in the series and i found the memories and excitement of my youth was renewed as i listened with rapt attention to the story of my long lost hero!!!! i have read other reviews critizing the reader. while i admit he is no ed herman or james earl jones, none the less i found the story was as wonderous and perhaps more so than when i was 15. i was listening to the story during the time the mars rover was sending back it's first pictures. i wouldn't have been surprised at all to see tars tarkas on a thoat ride past, or to see the airships of helium in the distance. in a time where movies such as star wars and lord of the rings overpower people with visual effects, the simplicity of this story allows my mind to create the background of the story. i smiled as i recalled the images of the story i created when i was 15. i could even see my room in the ole homestead where i first encountered dotar sojat! i gave the cd's to a friend of mine at church who has young boys that love star wars and lord of the rings. he smiled, said he didn't like the reader, but that the story was awesome!!

i whole heartedly recommend the martian series to you .... listen to these 5 and then head off to your local barnes and noble and get the rest. you won't be dissapointed!!!

ahhhh ... the wonders of barsoom!!!!!

I have always heard a lot about ERB's Barsoom books but I never got around to reading them and now I don't have to. When I first started to listen to this book I was taken aback by the southern accent. I thought to myself "there is no way I can sit through 6 hours or so of this" but when I found out that the reader was reading in the character of John Carter I started to enjoy myself. Then when he did the voices of the martians in the choppy style sort of like he was a person comfortable with english but not his first language, I thought it was great. I think the story was really brought to life by this reader and I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

A lifelong science-fiction fan, I had never been exposed to the John Carter series until I downloaded this audiobook. Wow, what a beautiful surprise it was, and I immediately purchased all the other audiobooks available in the Carter series. Bolen's "southern gentleman" narration takes some getting used to at first but soon becomes addictive and even comforting.

Full of wonder and surprise.

Here at Audible, I have to say it was a great story, but bad voice talent. It took me a week to get through a 6 hour book. I can't say how greatful I was when a new reading was released in conjunction with the forth coming movie. If you want to listen to this book buy the new version you will ultimintly have a better listening experience.

One of the first books I bought...

John Bolen captures Carter's character & voice perfectly. You can just picture Burroughs scenes in your mind as Carter tries to figure out Deja Thoris. This is a magical tale that draws you in deeply into the world of Martian honor against good old fashioned Virginian honor. The love between Deja and John Carter is legendary and heart warming.

Charming fantasy

I read this series when I was twelve and very much enjoyed experiencing this story again. It is a fine production and the narrator fits the part perfectly. Escapism to a simple, romantic throwback story.

Very enjoyable tale, I listen on the way to work and found myself sitting in the parking lot not wanting to turn it off.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the narrator. He lends a texture and richness to the character that did nothing but contribute to these, the very beginnings of space opera. I can't wait to hear the rest!

Engrossing and fun. Space Opera at its best delivered with southern charm.
