Publisher's summary

In a Deviant Future, the world has been reshaped. Humanity has been changed. Yet despite it all, one thing does survive - love.

The world outside the domes is a scary place, but nothing compared to the marauder who captures Laura.

With one dark look, Axel promises violence, yet his touch is gentle. He shows her a different way of living. A new set of truths. How the ancients used to do things.

Makes her want a forbidden thing called love. But can she leave her past and beliefs behind?

The woman is trouble with a capital T. Yet the moment Axel sees her, rational thought disappears, and when she ends up in grave danger, he can't stop himself from going to her rescue.

Will he be in time to save her?

Contains mature themes.

Toxic Dust by Eve Langlais

Toxic Dust by Eve Langlais

1st book in the post-apocalyptic Deviant Future series.
Laura is a worker in the Dome. She works and follows the rules because any deviant behavior is swiftly dealt with. The Dome is all she has even known. She is naive and without hope. When she fights off a childish monster, her life is thrown into chaos. Laura finds herself out in the wasteland and fighting for her life. Are the deviants all she’s been told?

A fast paced, enthralling read that I didn’t want to put down. It’s an after nuclear world with surprises around every corner. Wonderful world building and a romance that goes from innocence to hot and sexy. From mindless drone worker to powers of the mind that can cause disruption and death.

I listened to the audio version which was narrated by Heather Costa. I also have a paperback and ecopy of this book.

Interesting concept

I’ve been a fan of Eve Langlais for several years. I enjoy her humor but wasn’t sure what to expect from a more serious world. This was a tad slow at first, but interesting enough to keep me listening. I’ve not read anything quite like it before and enjoyed stepping outside my normal book bubble. There was a little of everything in this story. The main characters were pretty well developed. While the female lead was painfully naive about a lot of things, she did grow as the story progressed. I have to agree with others who mention the baddies were a bit lackluster though which is the reason for dropping a star. Overall this was al interesting book, and I look forward to continuing the series.

Great concept, okay execution

This author is usually good for pulpy, campy paranormal romances, high on humor and naughty bits.
This series is sadly light on those things and instead leans into world building on a post-apocalyptic Earth. It reminds me of the 80s cartoon Thundar The Barbarian, with weird magics, mutated creatures, and the remnants of humanity broken into clans, some MadMax primitive and others seeking to science their way to supremacy.

There are a lot of cool features of the world and the people, but the story is too short to do much other than speed along with vague descriptions. Come at this for the fantasy and magic rather than credible science-fiction.

“I will always come for you!”
That repeated phrase brought me Last of the Mohican vibes, especially with Axel of the wasteland finding an HEA with sheltered Laura. I enjoyed the romance, even if the sex was pretty tame and the story itself rather slow. This was worth it as an Audible Plus listen, and also as part of a three book collection.
It’s advisable to listen in order because the various MCs are introduced with overlapping stories and the final chapter of each book teases the next one.
