Publisher's summary

It has been 10 years since the magical Cataclysm which destroyed the twin strongholds of the two world's most powerful Mages, killing Urtho, creator of the gryphons, and sending his forces into exile. Now Urthro's peoples - human and non-human alike - live in a terraced city carved into the face of a gleaming white cliff on the edge of the Western Ocean. Secure...at least until the fleet of the mysterious Black Kings appears in their harbor, bringing envoys who inform the residents of White Gryphon that their newfound home lies on the northern perimeter of lands claimed by this powerful kingdom. Desperate not to lose their hard-won home, Skandranon, along with his longtime friend Amberdrake agree to accompany the envoys back to the Court of the Black Kings, hoping to negotiate an alliance.

When a high ranking noble who opposes this alliance is found murdered, Skandranon and Amberdrake realize that they are up against unknown enemies who will stop at nothing, even the use of diabolical Blood Magic, to destroy White Gryphon.

Brilliance and humor

One of my favorites. I like it so much that this is the first review I've bothered to write.

Great Story, read by another repressed actor

I dearly love this story, but really wish that almost every person reading a Valdemar story wasn't a repressed actor. I'd appreciate the reading and giving the characters different voices a lot more if they didn't all give the "bad guys" the most idiotic parody of a black hat wearing, mustache stroking, evil cackling Hollywood villain ever. When you first hear the voice come in you immediately know - that's the bad guy. Immediately after that you want to stop listening despite the great story because you can't stand listening to that voice.

Already a Lackey fan - Love re-living these tales!

I have read this books many time so I was very excited that they finally came to audio book! Gary Furlong is a great choice for these books as he brings a bit of 'attitude' to the voices and actually sounds weary when the characters are. I know it is minor thing but I love that about this.

Classic series

I read this series about 20 years ago and fell in love with it then as well as all of the books related to the Black Gryphon. I find Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon to be incredibly imaginative in their writings. The characters and storylines are so well developed that you feel a part of the story. I have all of her books in hardcopy and have found it so enjoyable to be able to listen to them now.
I highly recommend the series as well as the other books related to this story.

Decent Series Entry

3.5

Set some years after The Black Gryphon, this continues the story of the Mage Wars entertainingly. The characters are enjoyable, though there is not much change. The story is only fair, with a new, rather contrived, civilization as foils. The story beats are moderately predictable, but the ending is well-enough written.

The series continues to sketch out the long-past backstory of the Valdemar novels, but in a way that sheds little light on those books. (This also means that as a prequel, it's not as predictable as it might otherwise be.)

Recommended if you're already a Lackey fan, but this is not a good place to start with her work.

Finally!

I've been a Mercedes Lackey fan forever, but I missed the Black Gryphon trilogy when it first came out. Really happy to find the books on Audible. BUT what's up with the cover illustration? The human male is purely generic romance cover, and the winged object in the background looks like the 'artist' suspended his puppy from a harness and painted toddler fairy wings as an afterthought!

Mercedes Lackey et al Valdemar series

The Black Gryphon, the White Gryphon and the Silver Gryphon are chronologically the first in this series. They cover the Mage Wars and explain the world before Valdemar.
