Publisher's summary

Forget the aesthetics of mainstream minimalism and discover a life of authenticity and intention with this “warm, engaging guide” (Laura Fenton, author of The Little Book of Small Living) to living with less…your way.

When Christine Platt set out on her journey to live with less, she never intended to become The Afrominimalist. She just wanted to tame the chaos in her closet! But after struggling with the austerity and whiteness of mainstream minimalism, Christine realized why minimalism often seems unattainable for so many: the emphasis on all-white, barren aesthetics distracts from the practice of living with intention. And so, she decided to do things her way by curating a life of less influenced by the African diaspora.

In The Afrominimalist’s Guide to Living With Less, Christine gets right to the heart of how childhood experiences and expectations manifest in adulthood, the delicate dance between needs and wants, and the complicated weight of familial and societal pressures. A far cry from Konmaried closets, capsule wardrobes, and conspicuous consumption, Christine’s brand of “living with less” is more than a decluttering regimen. “By detailing her own maximalist-to-minimalist transformation, Platt puts readers at ease” (The Washington Post) and presents a radical revisioning of minimalism, one that celebrates the importance of history and heritage, and gives you permission to make space for what really matters…your way.

Beautifully illustrated with original black-and-white prints and line drawings, The Afrominimalist’s Guide to Living With Less is a testament to the idea that anyone can be a minimalist and a warm invitation to a life curated with intention, perfect for readers of Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus (The Minimalists), Marie Kondo, Joshua Becker, and Courtney Carver.

Well Done!

Platt gave me what I’ve been missing from so many other approaches to minimalism. I especially appreciate her attention to the needs of her Black audience. I find her approachable, kind, compassionate, knowledge, and experienced. A wonderful guide on this journey of living with less stuff and more joy.

So many jewels in this book.

This is more than a book on minimalism for black folx. It's a guide for living authentically through creating space and opportunity for reflection, intention, healing, and growth.

This book made you examine the reasons why you purchase so many items.

I like that the author took you on her own journey and explained that this was not going to be a one and done process.

I loved this book!

I have been on a minimalism for 8 years and although I’m still not where I want to be, I am far from where I was. As a black woman it can be hard to identify with this movement. I loved Christine’s take and the “For the culture” excerpts. Great read or listen.

Sandria The Narrative Changer

This book helped me to reconsider the reasons behind why I accumulate “stuff”, struggle to stay organized and hold on to things I don’t use. If I get rid of all these clothes, what will I wear?!?! I’ll wear the clothes I actually want to wear and truly enjoy wearing. I can’t be afraid of empty space. That does not signify lack; it signifies opportunity to create. It represents more ease and peace.

I love the author’s wit and candor, and her compassion for self and others on this journey.

Very thoughtful approach to the psychology that supports decluttering, and defining what minimalism may mean to the reader.

The Minimalist Movement may have multiple approaches, including one that includes cultural aesthetics and ways to curate one’s own minimalist designs. I enjoyed it and gained tips for my ongoing, post-retirement decluttering.

Love this perspective!

So grateful that I discovered Christine and got to hear her read her story. Love the "one size DOESN'T fit all" approach to living with less, being intentional, and working through our downsizing and minimalism journeys.
