Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

1970s, Southern Alabama. Sixty-two-year-old Jeremiah Lewis Taylor, or “Nub,” has spent his whole life listening to those he loves tell him he’s no good—first his ex-wife, now his always-disapproving daughter. Sure, his escapades have made him, along with his cousin and perennial sidekick, Benny, just a smidge too familiar with small-town law enforcement, but he’s never harmed anyone—except perhaps himself.

Publisher's summary
New York Times best-selling author James Lee Burke brings listeners a captivating tale of justice, love, brutality, and mysticism set in the turbulent 1960s.
The American West in the early 1960s appears to be a pastoral paradise: golden wheat fields, mist-filled canyons, frolicking animals. Aspiring novelist Aaron Holland Broussard has observed it from the open door of a boxcar, riding the rails for both inspiration and odd jobs.
Jumping off in Denver, he finds work on a farm and meets Joanne McDuffy, an articulate and fierce college student and gifted painter. Their soul connection is immediate, but their romance is complicated by Joanne’s involvement with a shady professor who is mixed up with a drug-addled cult. When a sinister businessman and his son who wield their influence through vicious cruelty set their sights on Aaron, drawing him into an investigation of grotesque murders, it is clear that this idyllic landscape harbors tremendous power - and evil. Followed by a mysterious shrouded figure who might not be human, Aaron will have to face down all these foes to save the life of the woman he loves and his own.
The latest installment in James Lee Burke’s masterful Holland family saga, Another Kind of Eden is both riveting and one of Burke’s most ambitious works to date. It dismantles the myths of both the 20th-century American West and the peace-and-love decade, excavating the beauty and idealism of the era to show the menace and chaos that lay simmering just beneath the surface.

Most are set in his beloved Louisiana, many hard by or on the Mississippi River, others in North Carolina, and even in midwinter Minnesota. But generally it's heat, humidity, and bugs that beset his people as they wrestle with affairs of the heart, matters of faith, and the pros and cons of tight-knit communities.

This magnificent novel by one of America's finest writers is the epic of one man's remarkable journey, set in 19th-century America against the background of a vanishing people and a rich way of life. At the age of 12, under the Wind moon, Will is given a horse, a key, and a map, and sent alone into the Indian Nation to run a trading post as a bound boy. It is during this time that he grows into a man, learning, as he does, of the raw power it takes to create a life, to find a home.

Hackberry Holland stories are amazing
I really enjoyed this book. It’s only 6 hours which makes me wonder if it’s abridged. I love James Lee Burkes style of writing. The way he describes things makes everything come alive. My Dad told me to check out his books. I had listened to a book from another author that Will Patton narrated and that’s what pushed me over the edge to give JLB a listen. This is my 4th or 5th book by Burke and won’t be my last. I have steered slightly away from the Robicheaux books as the movies weren’t that great and the bayou isn’t my favorite scenery. I’m going to start listening to them after this as the writing style is too amazing to not listen to all of James Lee Burke’s books; at least the ones that Will Patton reads as he is the best reader, he truly makes the words come alive as does Burke.

Disappointing
I have been a Burke fan for years. I've read most (or all?) of his books and some twice. He usually has subplot of religious superstition mixed in with his excellant writing: a phantom riverboat, ghosts of Confederate soldiers, etc. and I accepted that because it was not the main trust of the book. This book is all Biblical superstition. The characters are 100% pure, the villains 100% evil. Most of Burke's villains have a satanic reference, but it's usually not the entirety of the character's personality.
Will Patton was excellent as was the writing but the story is a huge disappointment.

The Holland series has never been my favorite…
James Lee Burke is one of my all time favorites! The books set in New Iberia being all marvelous snd the stand alone In the Moon of Red Ponies, being one of my favorite books…. This as the earlier book The Jealous Kind, seem to be shadows of the others he has written. I’ll never miss a JLB book, but all in all they don’t hold up to my taste. But, they were still enjoyable none the less….
