Publisher's summary

An instant Wall Street Journal best seller and “a joy to read” (Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen, authors of Difficult Conversations), Ask for More shows that by asking better questions, you get better answers - and better results from any negotiation.

Negotiation is not a zero-sum game. It’s an essential skill for your career that can also improve your closest relationships and your everyday life. Still, people often shy away from it, feeling defeated before they’ve even started. In this groundbreaking new book on negotiation, Alexandra Carter - Columbia law professor and mediation expert who has helped students, business professionals, the United Nations, and more - offers a straightforward accessible approach anyone can use to ask for and receive more.

We’ve been taught incorrectly that the loudest and most assertive voice prevails in any negotiation, or otherwise, both sides compromise, ending up with less. Instead, Carter shows that you get far more value by asking the right questions of the person you’re negotiating with than you do from arguing with them. She offers a simple yet powerful ten-question framework for successful negotiation where both sides emerge victorious. Carter’s proven method extends far beyond one “yes” and instead creates value that lasts a lifetime.

Ask for More is “like having a negotiation coach in your corner” (Linda Babcock, author of Women Don’t Ask) and gives you the tools to bring clarity and perspective to any critical discussion, no matter the topic.

Looking to better serve in business/personal life?

An incredible read for those looking to better serve in business and/or personal life. You will learn to ask to the right/open-ended questions that will build a strong level of trust from the first interaction with new relationships and a deeper level of understanding with all relationships. You will find yourself taking action with these strategies immediately in all parts of your daily life. Perhaps my favorite part is that these good questions will empower others to collaborate and make the whole negotiation process so much more effective and efficient. Both parties win when we ask for more!

A Lesson On Relationship Mastery

The author shares stories for both context and application of the principles and questions for use in simple and effective ways. While the basis of the book was not earth-shatteringly new information, the importance of structure in relation to the psychology of people and relationships was a huge learning lesson for me. Anyone looking to improve relationships and never compromise with a feeling of loss should read this book.

Terrific negotiation guide

I’ve studied negotiation for many years, read lots of books, and met many experts. This book will be at the top of my recommendation list for this looking to learn more about negotiation, regardless of where they are at in their own journey to negotiation excellence. Alex Carter hits home the important points of understanding yourself first, then your negotiation partner and their situation. Very well done!

Amazing questions to navigate negotiations

I really enjoyed listening to this book. The 10 questions provide an excellent framework for understanding the problem, needs, fears and concerns, and prior skills that can be used as you work to develop first steps and move forward.

Whether you are pursuing a personal goal, trying to get a team on the same page, resolving a conflict, trying to understand a toddler's meltdown, or just trying to navigate the relationships in your life, this book is a go to resource.
