Publisher's summary

From D-Day to the Battle of the Bulge and more, here is the authorized biography of one of the most celebrated paratroopers of Easy Company, Sergeant Shifty Powers, the legendary sharpshooter from the Band of Brothers.

As a boy, Darrell "Shifty" Powers' goal was to become the best rifle shot he could be. His father trained him to listen to the woods, to "see" without his eyes. Little did Shifty know his finely tuned skills would one day save his life - and the lives of his fellow paratroopers.

As one of the original men who trained at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, Shifty was one out of only two soldiers in Easy Company to initially earn the coveted expert marksman designation. He parachuted into France on D-day and fought for a month in Normandy; 80 days in Holland; 39 in the harshly cold winter of Bastogne; and for nearly 30 more near Haguenau, France, and the Ruhr pocket in Germany.

Shifty's War is a tale of heroism and adventure, of a soldier's blood-filled days fighting his way from the shores of France to the heartland of Germany, and the epic story of how one man's skills as a sharpshooter propelled him to a life greater than he could have ever imagined.

Best Read in a While!

My Mother is from Clintwood, and one of her sisters married a Powers. We don’t really know if we are related to the Shift Powers family. But I did enjoy the mentions of places I have visited, like Haysi and Frying Pan Mountain.

But beyond my personal reading agenda, I found this book to be about as good a description of one soldier called up in WWII and seeing this account of his personal war experience. Obviously, Shifty was a man of quite honor and inner goodness. I loved this book and recommend it to everyone. There is a little static in a few places in the audio edition.

Incredible life, Incredible story.

A word about the Band of Brothers.
Someone gave me the (metal) box set of Band of Brothers and I had no idea of the story of Easy company. But being a student of WW-2, I gave it a try.
The first thing I did was check out the "how they did it" section of the DVD's. That should not be overlooked. Captain Dale Dye, who has acted as advisor for many films of WW-2 and the Vietnam War as teck advisor. He put the entire cast through his own boot camp to get everyone in Easy to function as a company needed to function.
It's a long set of DVD'S even without the extras. But as with the book there's a certain feeling that you get when you "go through the entire war" with these guys. I was very pleased to discover this book about one of the guys that I gravitated to the most.
I HIGHLY recommend Shifte's War. You might find yourself as I have longing for the country that we have lost.

a portrait of the life of an american hero

I'm a large fan of the book Band of Brothers and of the series, each of these men provided a service to our country and the world and they deserve to be remembered. This book does just that.

The first person point of view kept my attention and helps make a connection between the reader and Shifty.

Loved the way it’s written from Shifty’s perspective, in Shifty’s voice. 10/10 for BOB fans

I loved that it was done in the 1st person.

Outstanding from beginning to end. Nothing in it was unlikeable. I cried at the end.

Feels like listening to the man himself

This story is great, it’s like an addendum to the series from Shifty’s perspective, and you really get the sense that he’s reading it himself
