About this listen

A New York Times best-selling author brings World War I-era England to vibrant life in this romantic saga in which destiny turns a lady's maid into a lady.

It is spring of 1915. Spoiled 21-year-old Clemency Jervis and her Fifth Avenue entourage board the Lusitania, bound for England, where Clemency is to marry the dashing Lord Hugo Hazzard of Loburn. A few miles off the Irish coast, the ship is torpedoed by the Germans. One of the few survivors is Clemency's maid, Hetty Brown, a young woman who resembles her mistress. Surprised to be taken for Clemency, Hetty carries out a daring deception that makes her a nobleman's wife and the mistress of a magnificent country estate, despite doubts about her among some in her aristocratic new set.

Suspenseful, surprising, and heartwarming, The American Heiress is a tale of love, war, and the far-reaching, often-unexpected consequences of our actions.

Good if you want a simple romance with a headstrong determined heroine. No graphic sex or violence nor modern social mores implanted to another era.

Predictable & Mildly Enjoyable

This book was a hidden surprise. So interesting and well done. Quite a mystery and a good ending.

Quite a surprise

I enjoyed the ending, especially the epilogue. The thrill of her possibly getting caught kept it exciting, even though she made some questionable decisions, like the horse riding. The narrator was okay, I would get confused, her male voices were too similar.

Intriguing story

Dispute a lack of character development ( by current standards) and a rather superficial heroine, the story was quite engaging and quite a page turner. Excellent narration - as always - by the wonderful Kirsten Potter.

Guilty pleasure

I live all of Dorothy Eden’s story’s. It was a pleasure to hear it. This book doesn’t have the same intensity as much as her other novels, but still wonderful to hear

Eden is my favorite author
