Publisher's summary

Fenella Thane is a desperate woman. Her absentee husband of eight years has served her with divorce papers, and she looks likely to lose her beloved home and be forced into a convent.

There is just one slim chance to avoid this fate, one person of prominence at court who she knows has the ear of the King. Oswald Vawdrey, the man who cruelly jilted her when she was a starry-eyed 15-year-old with a head full of romantic dreams.

Fen swallows her pride and rides to the King's court at Aphrany to beg for Lord Vawdrey's intercession. But Lord Vawdrey is not the charming boy she remembers, and he has no interest in halting her divorce. Instead, he has quite different plans for his former intended bride.

Fenella is about to discover there is more to Oswald Vawdrey than meets the eye. And she may not be quite so forsaken as she once thought....

Contains mature themes.

Perfection

I love Alice’s book so much and this is one of my favorites. The narrator is perfect. The story intricate. And the characters flawless.

Stellar!

Coldbreath is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. I read her books over and over, so finding that they are out on Audible AND very well narrated is making me very happy. Love this one. The hero is so undone by the heroine.

Alice doesn’t miss

Sometimes with longer books, it’s easy to get side tracked and miss things, but not with Alice’s writing. She has a way of thrusting her characters together, even when they are surrounded by others. There is a sweet intimacy between these two that had me deeply invested. From start to finish I 💯% would recommend.

Amazing writing meets inspired Narration

This book is my favorite in the see. I go back to it again and again. I only wish all the entries came out with the audible book upon release. Alice Coldbreath has quickly become one of my favorite authors, she has built a world that is captivating and I personally love the Vawdrey brothers, but Oswald and Fenela are my favorites. Love the story, the narrator clearly enjoyed it too, because her performance is what makes this story shine. Simply perfection from start to finish. You’ll laugh and cry and it will always be a fresh story from start to finish. Definitely a must read!

Solid entry for the series, a bit too repetitive with protagonists’ behaviors

I’ve read or listened to various books in the Brides of Karadok world before understanding the entire timeline.

They’re pretty well written books and this one is too as far as substantive storytelling, full world building, intriguing side characters, court machinations and dysfunctional family dynamics.

Alice Coldbreath is no slouch at the steamy scenes either. Plenty of bodice-ripping, alpha males and the like.

The Vawdrey brothers are an interesting trio with a leas than ideal background which makes their story arcs fun to get into, especially when they interact with each other and dig into the impact of their philandering controlling father.

This book felt a little too long at times repeatedly showing the FMC to be naive of court life and MMC callous and controlling. After so much of it I began to dislike both of them. The addition of other characters into the storyline helped move things along without beating me over the head with the same examples.

Once it cane together it was still a really good story and laid the groundwork for two more books in the series.

Loved this one

Yes the Heroine was naive, but she was young when she married a man who married her for her dowry. Not love. I found her sweet and she was not cherished by the men in her life. She was in awe of the fact that she was wanted, but also frightened about her future. It was long but I loved it. I don't wish to reveal to much.

perfect

The story is great - the main characters both need healing and eventually loving. They suit each other perfectly. I love them both - usually I can point out something that I don't like about the main characters, but not these. There are little pieces of the story that I thought meant nothing until hours later - how clever - what a great writer. The narrator did such a great job and added so much to the enjoyment of the book.

Skip this one

The first book in the series, Baseborn Bridegroom, was much better. In that that book, Oswald is introduced as the insightful, level headed older brother. I had high hopes for his story in book 2 but his character is changed into the typical jealous alpha male. Gone is the insightful man and he dominates his wife by shutting her down every time they have a misunderstanding. It’s very frustrating since he tells her that she “must come to him with her troubles” but when she does, she is not allowed to speak! The writing is inane and I found myself skipping ahead just to finish. I am disappointed that the author didn’t give Oswald the interesting personality hinted at in the first book.

Longer than necessary

Well developed main characters with interesting side characters. What turned me off a bit was how weak and naive the main female character behaved. The story dragged on and on way too long.
