Publisher's summary

What could be better than space adventures? Captain Surgeon knows the answer to this question - space piracy! Loot, pillage, plunder, and sell all the lucre - that's the motto of the Galactogon pirates, and Surgeon is doing his best to join their number.

But what is to be done when the enigmatic Uldans do not want to leave our swashbuckler in peace and keep laying new mysteries in his path, distracting him from his main goal? How does one become a formidable buccaneer, the scourge of Galactogon's countless star systems, when an indomitable alien invasion is razing empires all across the galaxy?

Time and time again, the game hands Captain Surgeon the Black Spot and time and time again, he refuses to take it. It looks like he will have to work extra hard to realize his dreams of piracy and find the answers to all these mysteries....

Pretty solid addition to the series .. mostly

I like Vasily's work. It has a great balance between high fantasy/sci-fi and real life consequences (if you live in the future and spend most of your time in VR -- that kind of real life). Game stats, high adventure, political intrigue in and out of the game. I dig the odd twists and turns the story takes quite a bit. That's why I keep coming back.

What could improve?

I don't buy the grand manipulators story. Its not a major factor to the majority of the story, but it does detract. These big wigs who run governments and businesses are spending their time analyzing human psyche and betting on it for fun? They shake off murder without batting an eye? Yeah -- okay they are sociopaths I guess. Just doesn't work for me. Maybe it works for others. Its not bad enough to worry too much about though. Like I said, the majority of this story is high adventure, witty hijinks and daring escapes.

I am NOT a fan AT ALL of Matt Godfrey's voice in this book. I almost had to quit listening at several points because it sounds like he was crying when he was trying to do a voice. His voice quivers and shakes and his female voices just don't work. Maybe he was sick -- or something. Just - not a fan.

If you like book one. Buy this one. Its a solid continuation of the story.

A Wanker I Was Meant To Be

I was a big fan of the first book, so I was really excited to see book two released in audio format and purchased it immediately. Disappointment ensued. One problem is that there was a two year gap between the first and second volumes. Apparently the author/publisher was not able to get the same reader who performed volume one. It's not that the reader does a bad job; it's just that the voice (literally) of the story changed. My main issue, however, is that Surgeon, the protagonist, turned into a huge greedy capitalistic jerk. What happened to the whole: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs", comrade? Mr. Mahanenko also displays more of a willingness to get his characters screwed over by "the betters" IRL, then involve them in a melodramatic struggle to recover than he did in book one. This is an unfortunate (although understandable, given their country's history) tendency that other Russian LitRPG writers tend to wallow in as well.

All in all, still a decent book. Just not as enjoyable as the first one.

Enjoyed Book 1 More

I was excited to listen to this book because I enjoyed book 1 quite a lot, but this one... It didn't grip me in quite the same way, and if I'm being honest it reads more like a space opera than a LitRPG. There's a few chapters in the beginning before entering the game, and after that the story feels like it was originally written as a space ship sci-fi, that was retroactively edited to insert quest prompts to classify it as LitRPG. There's no real pursuit of new skills/abilities or anything like that. Things are described as they would be in non-LitRPG novels without any mention of game mechanics aside from the occasional "You've completed this quest."

It wasn't a terrible listen, but it also wasn't one of my favorites.

Do not buy

This is the second book in the series and it starts off so bad I couldn’t make it past chapter two. Not only is the whole premise of the first book thrown out the window. Our stupid mc loses his backbone and lets the company walk all over him I’m returning this book.
