Publisher's summary

The sordid number-one New York Times best-selling true crime story of adultery, addiction, gambling debt, and murder in a privileged suburban town - from author and journalist Joe McGinniss.

The Marshalls were the model family of Tom’s River, New Jersey, living the American dream and seemingly in possession of all that money could buy. Rob Marshall, a successful insurance broker, was the big breadwinner, king of the country-club set. Maria Marshall was his stunningly beautiful wife and the perfect mom to their three great kids.

Then one night, while the couple drove home from Atlantic City, Rob, his head bloodied, reported Maria had been brutally slain. Sympathy poured in - until disquieting facts began to surface...and the true story of adultery, gambling, drugs, and murder tore the mask off Rob Marshall and the blinders off the town that thought he could do no wrong.

True crime

This is definitely not a fun story but one worth hearing. The family is very strong and gives a voice to someone whose voice was cut short.

Story dragged

This book seemed to drag on and on with many areas becoming difficult to listen to without wanting to fast forward. Details are good but it seemed that there was a lot of repetitive information.

It is, of course, a devastatingly sad story and my heart goes out to the sons of Maria Marshall.

Not nearly as good as Fatal Vision

After a while, this story simply wore me out....it was so incredibly sad, and the guilty party so vapid and self centered that you just wish it all to end. I did not enjoy it much at all, and had to force myself to finish.

TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this true accounting of the Rob Marshall story. It continues to amaze me how people can lead such double lives and justify it as 'normal'.

great listen

Excellent story telling of true crime. Thorough and deep. However, there are updates to this story. Oldest son is married and successful. Actual shooter has confessed. Would like have heard an additional Epilogue .

Highly Recommend!

It was a very interesting true crime story in general but it was presented very well and the different voices did not come across as corny. Add to that, the fact I live in the state where the murder took place so it was super interesting to hear familiar towns and even street names. I could not stop listening!

Very good

Very good book all around. So fantastic it’s hard to believe. Such a loss for the sons. But a true demonstration of how one person can be so seif centered and hurt so many.

Blind Selfishish

Gibson Frazier did a 5 star read of this book. He changed his voice for the several male characters. This made this true story come to life. It is amazing what a person will do for their own desires above there children. Selfish to the core.

Too much dialogue

The dialogue, which I believe is what the author imagined it took place in real life, is served best in a fictional account based on a true story. I prefer my true crime to be simply facts.
