Anwen's uncanny resemblance to Princess Lavena has been a curse since the moment she entered her service, as the spoiled princess has frequently used it to her advantage by forcing Anwen to switch places with her. But Princess Lavena's latest scheme is her worst - and most dangerous - yet: compelling Anwen to take the princess's place in her marriage to her loathed fiancé, Prince Liam.
Bound by an enchanted contract not to reveal the charade, Anwen is forced to go through with the masquerade and endure a marriage to a man who despises the woman he believes her to be. As time goes on, Anwen struggles not only to maintain her identity, but to fight her deepening feelings as she begins to fall in love with her new husband, a man who not only isn't hers to keep, but who has no idea who she really is.

What Works
Charming Romantic Tension
Readers frequently praise the relationship between Anwen and Liam as irresistible:
“The tension between Liam and Anwen is delicious, and I cannot recommend this sweet book enough.”
On Goodreads, many reviews highlight the “adorable” pairing and soft, heartfelt romance:
• “Loooved it! … Camille Peters is now one of my new favorite authors. Such a great story…”
• “The theme of identity doesn’t sacrifice the story for the message but is woven in very nicely.”
Clean, Fluffy, and Sweet
The book maintains a clean romance tone—PG-rated, with kissing and emotional intimacy, but little else:
“…clean. There is kissing but nothing further.”
“It’s rather FLUFFY!”
A Standalone Entry
Although it’s the third book in the series, many readers say they had no problem diving straight in:
“I haven’t read any of the other books in the series yet but I had no trouble diving into the world so it worked very well as a stand alone.”
Well-Themed and Creative
Multiple reviewers appreciated how the themes of identity and masquerade are interwoven organically through the narrative.
⸻
What Might Not Work for Everyone
Too Sweet, Not Enough Conflict
Some critiques point out that the narrative leans heavily on sweet romance at the expense of deeper drama or tension:
“After a few chapters the witty banter continued and that was all the entire book was. It was pure fluff with practically no plot.”
An Audible review echoes this sentiment:
“There just isn’t any story there… hour after hour of hearing how much someone loves someone else, but couldn’t possibly, lather, rinse, repeat.”
Liam’s Character Consistency
A few readers noted that Liam’s character felt less compelling this time around:
“He just seemed like a pale imitation of himself a lot of the time.”
⸻
Final Thoughts
Identity is a heartfelt, fairy-tale-flavored romance with a gentle tone and an enchanting premise. It shines brightest in its tender romance, the emotional journey of its heroine, and the clever use of the identity motif inspired by The Goose Girl. If you love light, comforting reads with strong emotional warmth and minimal drama, this book is a delightful choice.
On the other hand, if you’re hoping for high-stakes conflict, intense narrative tension, or deeply complex character arcs, you may find it a bit too saccharine or thin in plot.
⸻
Recommendation
** Recommended for you if you enjoy**:
• Fairy-tale retellings (The Goose Girl, The Princess and the Pauper)
• Clean, soft romance and emotional tension
• A standalone story with thematic richness and character charm
** You might want to skip or wait on it if you prefer**:
• Stronger plot momentum or more intense conflict
• Gritty drama or darker character arcs
• Less “fluffy” and more suspenseful romance

Anwen is certainly a girl I would love young ladies to admire. She is self-less, empathetic, kind, and wise. Someone we all can emulate. The narrator is stupendous, as always. As for the story, most of it kept me engaged. I do like Liam and Anwen together, as they bring out the best in one another.
My issues arise from how unrealistic it seemed that people would not recognize Anwen more readily as an "imposter". As for the writing, there are very frequently used phrases such as "I ached" when describing how Anwen feels. It was repetitive after a while and predictable. Not enough to make me lose interest in the story, however. I would definitely recommend a listen.
Worth a listen! Suspend your disbelief though.
