Beth Montgomery seems to have the perfect life: a beautiful house in the hills above Los Angeles, a handsome, ambitious husband, and plans of starting a family. So it doesn't occur to her to worry when the news breaks of a quadruple homicide across town, a botched drug deal that leaves an undercover officer among the dead. Beth certainly would never think to tie the murders to the sudden reappearance in her life of wild, sexy Cassie Ogilvy, the estranged best friend she hasn't seen since they were college roommates.

Story
Eric Jerome Dickey strides boldly over the minefield that is modern marriage. The central couple's biggest challenge is timing: He works days; she works nights. Instead of growing together, they're rapidly drifting apart, coexisting on stolen phone calls from work, punctuated by occasional bedroom encounters that leave them both feeling even emptier and more alone. When she finds out about his affair - and starts her own - the delicate fabric of their marriage is torn irrevocably asunder. Or is it?

My name is Courtney Jane Salinger...and I'm sick of games. Sick of the Friday night bar-scene-cum-meat-market. Sick of awful dates and one-night stands, booty calls and guys who don’t call back, mixed messages or no messages and - and - and...I'm sick of all of it. I’m done. It's too hard, and worse: little by little, it's making me hard. It's breaking my heart. What do I want? That's easy. I want a house in suburbia with a white picket fence. I want babies to buckle into a minivan. But most of all, I want to be married. I want a husband.

One frustrating day, she trades in the long hair for a dramatically short, natural cut and sends her commitment-balking boyfriend packing. It's a bold declaration of independence and one that has effects she never could have imagined.

The forest is my happy place. A chance to get away from my stifling apartment, the sweat of the city, a job I hate. A Sunday morning spent hiking in the woods with my dog is a dream come true...until it becomes a waking nightmare. I don't see the hole until it's too late. Then I'm at the bottom of it, staring up at the ground 12 feet above me. A stupid accident. Or was it? Because soon, someone's bringing me food and water. Someone who doesn't want me to see his face. pretty bad...but I finished
This was a brutal story to listen to. Besides the narration that failed to differentiate between characters, the storyline itself was weak and shallow...going in circles sometimes to advance the plot. It was free and helped to pass the time but I'm glad I didn't spend a credit on this.

Painful all around
My first irritation was the narrator. I guess I got comfortable with good ones so this one was especially grating.
The characters were also irritating. Babe. Gag. Too much cheating. Too much porn. I’m not a prude and I can overlook some content if the story is good.
Which leads me to the third irritation. What story? I’m sure I gave up too early but I just couldn’t take any more. Listening to a narrator butcher a man’s voice while ordering a woman to bend over and watch him in the mirror as he pounds her from behind and realizing that I couldn’t stand any of the characters so far and had nothing to interest me enough to continue the torture…
I did what I rarely do and stopped listening to it.
Maybe others enjoy that stuff, I just couldn’t do it any more.
