Młody mężczyzna budzi się w tytułowym Żywym Lesie pozbawiony pamięci. Spotyka tam czarownicę, która wyjaśnia mu, że nazywa się Leon, jest księciem wielkiego królestwa, a przede wszystkim Bohaterem wybranym przez tajemniczą, wieloosobową siłę stwórczą nazywaną Jaźniami, która rządzi Żywym Lasem. Jego zadaniem, wyznaczonym przez tę siłę, jest zabicie Potwora. W tym celu otrzymuje magiczny miecz – Ljosarem. Z początku Leon nie chce na to przystać, jednak wskutek manipulacji, ostatecznie godzi się spełnić swoją rolę. Walka z Potworem nie jest jednak jedyną, jaką musi stoczyć. Stawia więc czoło: smokowi, demonom, wilkołakom, a także samym Jaźniom, które co chwilę tracą wiarę w jego kompetencje jako Bohatera.
Utrzymana w konwencji baśni z pogranicza snu i jawy opowieść daje do myślenia i wywołuje skojarzenia z manipulacjami, których doświadczamy w życiu realnym.
