Matt Dodson arrives at Space Academy little prepared for the rigorous program he is about to enter. But that’s the point of the academy: to take young men and steep them in a demanding tradition of honor, courage, and sacrifice until they have earned the right to join the Patrol as guardians of the solar peace.
Unfortunately, even the academy’s high power training can’t completely prepare Matt and his friends Tex and Oscar for the harrowing test of both survival and diplomatic skills they will face when a mission goes disastrously wrong.
A classic coming-of-age tale, and one of the most influential books in the history of science fiction, Space Cadet features the compelling mix of wit, action, and a clear vision of the future that are the hallmarks of Heinlein at his best.

"Nothing better than Heinlein performed by a cast!"
This is not a long book and the science is very dated. But what Heinlein could envision is amazing. Reaction mass ships who require some mass purpose stop wars. They do these by having only under their control in set orbits, the Atom Bombs (that is right, Atom Bombs).
They are a military protection patrol. They are not an Army of any state. They keep the peace for the entire solar system.
They also control an elite and invincible Space Marine division. The book uses something like 15 voices and do a voice actions. If you pay cash (it is cheaper by cash than a token) it is fabulous entertainment.
Some Sci-Fi readers who will not find this book worth much because it is dated. But if you love a terrific Sci-Fi that is represented of an very well respected Master of the Genre, you might do as I just did.
I listened to the book in one sitting. What a Reat!
I gave "the story" only 3 stars is because of the dated Sci-Fi. Acknowledge thank it is a listen from a pen of a Master Sci-Fi writer it is written and you will find them
"Listen to see how far Heinlein came in his writing"
Only if my friend was a huge fan of Heinlein and they wanted to hear one of his earliest works.
Well, ANY kind of plot before the last 1/8th of the book
Yes, but that isn't really a good thing. The story was slowly paced with little actually going on. The voice actors often came off as bored.
Only from a historical perspective.
I wouldn't recommend this as an example of Heinlein's or Full Cast Audio's work. It is flat and relatively lifeless.

""Just the Best""
Classic Heinlein, His second book, and you can see him growing as a truly gifted writer. His style and knowledge of what it was like being a midshipman, and later a navy man shows. You must remember the times Bobert A. Heinlein grew up in, and the trust people had in their government was much different then today. So the idea of circling atomic warheads in orbit, like satilites, the praverbale "sword of Damalces" was not so far fetched.
That it was a complete story, not like the bull crap that Hollywood churns out today. The lazy garbage that has very little story, just a lot of conjecture. Like the last Promethus movie, in which the writers havent done any of the hard work needed to flesh out a story, and just offer us a bunch of pretty pictures, and big Ka--splosions!
He has a fantastic narrators voice and is full of presence and complements the rest of the actors.
When they found the old ship, the long dead Patrol men, who were imortalized in ceremony.
Loved it great for kids, and adults alike.

"Nice to Listen To"
Easy to sit back and get into. Had to remember what year it was made but it was very good
"Heinlein's amazing vision! Remember, 1949!"
I first read this book when I was in seventh grade. I remeber walking through the halls of my school with the book and being teased for being a "Space Cadet" for reading a book titled "Space Cadet." It did not matter. I still loved the story.
Now, I know lots more about life the universe and everything, and I still love this book! Heinlein's juveniles are anything but jubenile. Heinlein never talked down to his reader. His science is all wrong in some cases, and of course it is dated, but those are not the key to great science fiction writing. It is the Story.
This one presents a 'coming of age' story based in a peace-keeping force that has sucessfully prevented war for a century. It is based in an institution with traditions of sacrifice, service and constant self improvement. It ends with the message that doing your best should not be something special. It should be what you do all the time because that is who you are. Not a bad message for any generation.
Remember that this book was published in 1949, and it becomes even more trail-blazing. These books set the path for modern Science Fiction writers.

"Avid listener of FCA stuff...but this?"
The BOOK is OK!
Other productions of Heinlein, by FCA, which are FUN-TASTIC are: THE STAR BEAST, THE ROLLING STONES, FARMER IN THE SKY, PODKAYNE OF MARS and THE RED PLANET.
The FCA team just did not seem as "enthused" about this book as they were in The Star Beast and The Rolling Stones, for example. In TSB and TRS, the narration make the books come alive! In SC, the narration seemed, to me, dull...kinda like they were just "reading the book"!
None! The BOOK is great! My Son and I have read Space Cadet probably 50 times during my life!
In Full Cast Audio's productions of The Star Beast and The Rolling Stones, Podkayne of Mars, The Red Planet and Farmer in The Sky (all by Robert Heinlein), the cast made those books become more alive than any Hollywood movie ever could! However, in SC (which I was chomping at the proverbial bit awaiting FCA's release) the cast just did not seem quite "right" for the book, in my opinion. Perhaps it is because my son and I don't watch TV, and listen to audiobooks instead (we listen together! I like them as much as he does!), and the fact that we have listened to The Star Beast, The Rolling Stones, Farmer in the Sky, The Red Planet and Podkayne of Mars so often that we were just expecting the quality of those productions from Full Cast Audio...or...maybe we have just listed to those too much! We WILL listen to Space Cadet again and again, I am sure! My son and I will spend many more hours together istening to the FCA stuff, from Heinlein and others...overall, Full Cast Audio cannot be beat!
