Critic reviews

"Raven’s Shadow is an excellent book.... The characters have a real interior life, with thoughts and second thoughts and feelings and the interaction between them is very good." (SF Revu)

"Patricia Briggs is a talented storyteller who enchants her audience with a spellbinding tale. Raven’s Shadow is going on this reviewer’s keeper shelf." (Midwest Book Review)

"Raven’s Shadow is an exciting and touching tale. It’s self-contained enough to give the reader a satisfying sense of completion by the end, while leaving room for a sequel that will be highly anticipated." (RT Book Reviews)

Book 1 of 2. Wishing for 3!

Fabulous narration. Top notch! As for the story, this is book one of two, a short fantasy series with wizards, elemental gods, specially gifted "Travelers" and some romance. I really bonded with the characters introduced in this book. They became real to me across the two books. Wish Briggs would write another book, making a trilogy of it. I want to see more of Seraph, Tier, Jes, Hennea, Lehr, Rinnie, Emperor Phoran the 26/27th, and his two loyal guards. I even loved the big black dog and the old war horse.

Heartwarming, engrossing, and fairly novel. Some grim scenes. Some black magic. Some bardic storytelling, song, and campfire camaraderie, to balance the darker bits.

My only gripe is that sometimes the author goes on too long, trying to explain how her magic works, what the "orders" are, who the gods are, etc. But that happens more in book 2 than in this book.

This wasn't bad but it didn't really engage me

Unlike the Mercy Thompson books this just didn't thrill me. The parts ere there but it wasn't working for me. I think some of that was due to the long info dump at the beginning where we were fast tracked through the relationship between Raven and Tier so we could get to where the action started.

Slow Start - Entertaining

Where does Raven's Shadow rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In a list of a top 10, it doesn't rank

What did you like best about this story?

It starts to become interesting when the resolution to the problem begins (trying not to give anything away)

What does Jennifer James Bradshaw bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

As with any narrator, you get to sit back and enjoy the story - just like it better then reading

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

??

Any additional comments?

Patricia Briggs spent too much time establishing the premise of the story in the beginning and it was hard to stay interested. Especially when establishing the bad relationship between Seraph and her husband's sister, considering it has no bearing on the actual story. If she couldn't gotten faster to the part of the shadowed priest and have gone from there it would've been better.

Good but newer stories much better

I love Patricia Briggs books, so when I came across this I had to give it a try, as always I lover her stories but this one wasn’t as exciting and didn’t capture me as some of her more recent books have. It still is good so give it a whirl.

So good.

It took me a while to decided to read this book. For some reason the description didn't appeal to me. But since I really love all her other books so much I decided to give it a try. And I have no regret! Well apart from not having bought it before now.

Surprisingly good

I love Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson and Alpha and Omega series. While waiting for the next book to come out in those series, I decided to try some of her earlier work. I was very pleasantly surprised at how good these stories were. Early books are not always quite as good as an author's books after they get some experience. It's a learning and maybe even refining process. This Duology however, Raven's Shadow and Raven's Strike had a great story, incredible characters and world building. Then you add a really good narrator. Jennifer James Bradshaw did a really good job and every character was well and truly done and totally distinguishable from the others. I really enjoyed this Duology and plan on reading/listening to all her earlier books now.

Good classic fantasy

4/5/ 4 stars; A-

I read this book several years ago and enjoyed it so thought I'd buy the audiobook. It was worth it for this classic style fantasy written with Patricia Briggs skill in developing characters. Jennifer James Bradshaw did a good job on the narration.

doing her "creating worlds" with an interesting mix of characters: nasty, benevolent, powerful and mundane
