Not as "light," but still Mrs. Pollifax

Would you listen to Mrs. Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha again? Why?

I probably would not listen again, although I enjoyed it the first time. I rarely listen to books a second time anyway, but this was a more somber book than the others in the series, and I'd rather move on.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Certain parts were a little too realistic this time around

What about Barbara Rosenblat’s performance did you like?

Always love Barbara Rosenblat. She does such a great job with the characters. In fact, I often search for books that have been read by her, and have found new authors due to her fun performances.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was definitely the audio equivalent of a page-turner!

Any additional comments?

I was influenced by another reader's comment about the book being "darker" than the others, and was hesitant to listen to this one, since the series started out as very "light." However, I'm very glad I did read it. It added some depth to Mrs. Polifax's character, and while parts of it were not what I chose this series to hear, I'm very much looking forward to listening to the next in the series.

Definitely the darkest Mrs. Pollifax.

It had to happen. Mrs. Pollifax gets in deeper in this book and the story is darker. It is still an excellent story, but a bit more realistic than the rest. An agent's life is a perilous one.

Mrs. Pollifax meets a terrorist

This Mrs. Pollifax adventure is based on the prospect of the return of Hong Kong to the Chinese in 1997, and is an almost eerie precursor of life in the 21st century, with fears of terrorists launching widespread attacks on entire cities. But Mrs. Pollifax is a match even for terrorists! Well-written, though not as cozy as most of this series. Mrs. P endures torture this time, and it isn't pretty. But she prevails, as usual. A bit more serious, but still has laugh-out-loud moments. Worth your credit!

I still love Mrs Pollifax

This has been the saddest tale of the whole series to this point. There are a few deaths and while not overly graphic in description they are witnessed. For this reason, this book may not be suitable for very young or very sensitive. Otherwise I have found this series to be a good family production.

Mrs Pollifax is married in this book and her husband even joins this party. I like Cyrus a lot.

Less fluff and more intrigue

I almost did not get this book based on some of the other reviews. Many of the other reviews said this book was too dark. It was not. Ms. Polifax is a CIA operative. CIA operatives do end up in situations that often involve great harm to themselves. This is not the first story in the series that touched on this. I would say this book is well worth the listen. It it is definitely a bit different than the other books in the series but still has the same characteristically quirky but skillful Mrs pollifax.

Definitely a darker Mrs Pollifax story

What made the experience of listening to Mrs. Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha the most enjoyable?

I always enjoy Barbara Rosenblat's narration. Even though the last few chapters of this book were a bit too realistic and violent for me, I did enjoy the book. Especially the return of favorite characters from previous books.

Would you recommend Mrs. Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha to your friends? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this particular book to anyone that does not like dark or violent images. Mrs Pollifax does get tortured at the end of this book and for that reason I would not listen to this book again.

What about Barbara Rosenblat’s performance did you like?

She reads the voice of Mrs. Pollifax perfectly. I cannot imagine anyone else narrating this series.

Not so sunny...

But realistic. This book takes a darker turn than the previous books. I liked it and will continue with the series.

A Really Fun Book and Series

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

These are a really entertaining series of books and this one is no exception. Barbara Rosenblat does a terrific job of reading and Mrs. Pollifax is a great character.

Any additional comments?

This old lady kicks butt! A very entertaining character, intelligent, creative and likeable. These books are like candy. I'm going to listen to every one of them.
