Publisher's summary

Julie Wallace is just 18 in 1934 when her father risks their life savings on a struggling newspaper and moves the family to a flood-prone Pennsylvania town. It is here a young woman's convictions take firm root, as Julie finds herself taking sides when battle lines are drawn between desperate steelworkers and the mill owners who control their lives. And it is here where her heart and her loyalties are torn, divided between two special men. But when a devastating natural catastrophe becomes the ultimate test of courage and commitment, Julie's remarkable inner strength will come to the fore, a strength born of faith and love. And don't miss Catherine Marshall's beloved best seller Christy.

Still a great book

I got a hold of this book as a young teen and read and reread it a dozen times at least before I saw it on Audible. Still as timeless as ever.

Good Story!

This is a very good story, however, I like Christy so much better!
I like that it is in a different time than Christy was. Often authors all focus stories on one time period, which is somewhat of what I was expecting with Cathryn Marshall's books, too.
The performance was very well done!
would purchase books by this author and performed by this narrator again!!

Insightful

I fell in love with Catherine Marshall when I read Christy years ago. I love faith based books and hers especially because she is a great storyteller. This is such an uplifting story with real emotion.

?

Is this Julie any relation to Christy or is Julie a sequel to Christy?
Thanks.

An Era of Strength

"Julie" is well-written fiction and my choice for a book club. The 1930's was a struggle for American families. The author drew a picture that showed the real strength came from the same Source that our Founders had.

Fascinating

A wonderfully gripping story. A little hard to follow at first, and difficult to get past the nasal tone of the narrator. But once you do, it's very entertaining!

Does not have the charm of Christy

I realized that it's been a year and I never actually reviewed this book. I think that waiting has actually helped me to have clear thoughts about this story.

Marshall was a talented writer. In this book, she explores many things that she herself dealt with in her life (at least that is what I surmise from what I know about her). I think this book suffered some because it was more about her life then it was a story.

Two of the things I liked most about Marshall's other fiction book, Christy, was the character growth and the realistic and lovable characters. Julie doesn't seem to grow or learn anything in this story and I had a hard time connecting with her. I loved her father's aspect of the story better. He grew and changed and was very likable.

The characters were vivid and the story was interesting. Just because I didn't love this book doesn't mean that I didn't appreciate Marshall's talent. The town was real, the characters, their struggles, and the times were vivid.

As a writer, I loved the newspaper and the struggles of Julie as a writer.

It's really hard to put into words how I feel about this book. It was vivid, well done and the climax was so good. I honestly have not read a book that captured <spoiler> a flood so vividly and well. Having helped out with disaster relief, I can tell you this was pretty accurate.</spoiler> The characters were realistic and some of them were lovable.

Perhaps the best way to sum up this book was that it was a well-told story, yet it had pessimistic undertones and did not hold the same charm of Christy.

SteadFast & Earnest

What made the experience of listening to Julie the most enjoyable?

It is a Long book and the voice is very pleasant to hear

If you’ve listened to books by Catherine Marshall before, how does this one compare?

This one is closely related in enjoyment to the first Christy Book.

Did Cassandra Campbell do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Somewhat Good voices

If you could take any character from Julie out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Julie herself of course

Any additional comments?

The book is Long and some details seem to be a bit tedious and unimportant until the finale then you want to go back and re-read it again. The surprise in this book is a work from the reveal of the Holy Spirit.
