Magician and a mawkish female partner don't mix

The protagonist, Peter weaves stage illusion and real magic in a fairly good mystery. Unfortunately he saddles himself with a clinging insecure whiner of a girlfriend, Liza. Most authors would craft a tragic demise for this albatross of a character, but if this series continues it looks like she's going to be inflicted on readers indefinitely. However, this is one reader who'll dodge the problem. I'm to done.

James Swain does an excellent job of character development and spins a wonderful follow up to Dark Magic.
