Publisher's summary

Opening with the exotic Lady Death entering the gumshoe-writer's seedy office in pursuit of a writer named Celine, this novel demonstrates Bukowski's own brand of humour and realism, opening up a landscape of seamy Los Angeles.

A Swan Song about a Red Sparrow.

You'll never see the end coming for this twisted tale of intrigue. It pounces upon you like a demented alligator plummeting from a Banyan Tree. Or something.

he's earned his place as a classic writer

Bukowski may be crass but he makes up for it by painting a vibrant picture. the narrator, Christian Baskous, is one of my favorites as far as audio books go. definitely worth the listen!

My new favorite Bukowski title

Great story, great characters, I love Bukowski, and Baskous does a bang up job narrating it. 5 stars for sure.

Bukowski’s greatest novel.

This is undoubtedly Bukowski’s greatest novel about the senselessness of life. It is so fun to listen to, especially by this narrator who goes the extra mile to give each character a full life of his own. I’ve listened to this book over 4 times, twice in Kuwait, ans twice in Rochester, New York. And I don’t mind listening to it a thousand times more. It is so funny, and so silly. And it is so profound as well, that it deserves its place in the pantheon of great American novels. I highly recommend it.

Different from Bukowskis usual work

I came into this book as a fan of Bukowskis work, I own several of his books on here.

it took me about 2/3s in to be into this book because it's completely different from Bukowskis writing. It's a 1950s era pulp detective novel in his style. which is jarring from his grounded real style. It's a slow burn. Once one of the story threads resolves, then it becomes interesting.

Weird, wild, ride of a book.

Great book Is really odd though. Death, aliens, Conspiracies, and good old fashioned Pulp detectives with a drinking problems. follow a drunk down on his luck private eye in his search for possibly dead famous authors, space alien invasion conspiracies, cheating wives, and corrupt weasly salesmen.

didnt much care for the narrators try at a female voice but otherwise it was a great adventure. definitely saving it in my favorites list. way too entertaining to miss. now i just gotta go ahead and get the hard copy

The sick imaginations of a horny drunkard

The conclusion was underwhelming. The story was engaging and tolerable, and the performance was good too. I can't deny though that I snickered a few times at the prejudious descriptions of some dumbwhitted characters.

A Swan Song about a Red Sparrow. Spoiler Alert.

You'll never see the end coming for this twisted tale of intrigue. It pounces upon you like a demented alligator plummeting from a Banyan Tree in the wilds of Fort Fracking Lauderdale. Or something.

Best noir book I’ve listened too

Bukowski is a god when it comes to dark humor. He makes me want to be a fat private dick.
