Jennette Fulda
About this listen
After undergoing gall bladder surgery at age 23, Jennette Fulda decided it was time to lose some weight. Actually, more like half her weight. At the time, Jennette weighed 372 pounds.
Jennette was not born fat. But, by fifth grade, her response to a school questionnaire asking What would you change about your appearance? was "I would be thinner.” Sound familiar?
Half-Assed is the captivating and incredibly honest story of Jennette’s journey to get in shape, lose weight, and change her life. From the beginning - dusting off her never-used treadmill and steering clear of the donut shop - to the end with her goal weight in sight, Jennette wows listeners with her determined persistence to shed pounds and the ability to maintain her ever-present sense of self.

Story
I’m missing out on my life. What’s wrong with me? If that’s ever crossed your mind, and if you know there’s more to life than what you’ve been living, this audiobook is for you. It sucks to acknowledge that you are what’s keeping you from the life you want. You sacrifice what you want most for what you want in the moment. You know everything you’re supposed to do, and yet you feel stuck - limited by your past, overwhelmed by your future - in a purgatory of your own behavior.

Story
At 29, Kelsey Miller had done it all: crash diets, healthy diets, and nutritionist-prescribed "eating plans", which are diets that you pay more money for. She'd been fighting her un-thin body since early childhood and, after a lifetime of failure, finally hit bottom. No diet could transform her body or her life. There was no shortcut to skinny salvation. She'd dug herself into this hole, and now it was time to climb out of it.

Story
In this searing, unflinchingly honest book, Portia de Rossi captures the complex emotional truth of what it is like when food, weight, and body image take priority over every other human impulse or action. She recounts the elaborate rituals around eating that came to dominate hours of every day, from keeping her daily calorie intake below 300 to eating precisely measured amounts of food out of specific bowls and only with certain utensils. When this wasn’t enough, she resorted to purging and compulsive physical exercise, driving her body and spirit to the breaking point.

the narrator could have been a lot more lively
not sure if I was that interested in the story, especially when the author mentioned she was not going to talk about her methods.
As I've went through the book though, I decided to listen through based on the very entertaining style of the author. Unfortunately, I did not feel the narrator put as much emphasis on the content as was necessary to make a great audio book. I think it may have been better had I read it myself.

Ok story, obnoxious narrator
This was a decently entertaining/inspiring story, however I almost couldn't get past how bad the narration was. It was distractingly terrible and made it hard to fully immerse yourself into the story. Just spoken in the slowwwwwest, most emotionless monotone. Wouldn't recommend for that reason.

Authors need to read their own memoirs!!!
I wanted this book to be so much more than what it was. The potential was there for sure. The problem with this book is in the narration. It should have been read by the author. The author puts the emotion behind the words. This narrator did not at all. I honestly think the author’s voice would have changed the whole book for me. I can tell she has a sense of humor, but the narrator did not do her humor any justice. Disappointing.

Smart, funny, and honest
I really loved this book and was incredibly surprised to see negative reviews. The author is honest while telling her weight loss journey. It might not always be what people want to hear, and it shouldn't - it's her point of view - her memoir. And I think it is awesome!
