Sixteen-year-old Lex Bartleby is a teenage grim reaper with the bizarre ability to Damn souls. That makes her pretty scary, even to fellow Grims. But after inadvertently transferring her ability to Zara, a murderous outlaw, Lex is a pariah in Croak, the little town she calls home. To escape the townspeople’s wrath, she and her friends embark on a wild road trip to DeMyse. Though this sparkling desert oasis is full of luxuries and amusements, it feels like a prison to Lex. Her best chance at escape would be to stop Zara once and for all - but how can she do that from DeMyse, where the Grims seem mysteriously oblivious to Zara’s killing spree?

What made the experience of listening to Scorch the most enjoyable?

Oh all of it. I just love the Juniors. And that Gina Damico. She is the best. Such a clever writer. I'm so glad I stumbled onto this series!

Which character – as performed by Jessica Almasy – was your favorite?

Pip. SOOOO adorable!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The ending of course. Talk about a cliffhanger!

Any additional comments?

You must read these books ASAP. They are smart, sassy, and splendid.

AHHHHHHHHHH! When does book 3 come out???

Good continuation to the series. The story was captivating, the ending was such that you really do want to read book 3.

Nice #2

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book continues the escapades of Lex and her friends in Croak. The second in this trilogy this book didn't lose its charm, mystery, suspense and dark humor.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love the play between Diggs and Lex, but new characters Pip and Bang are just as great too.

What about Jessica Almasy’s performance did you like?

I love the way she can change her voice to read the different characters. It really helps put you in the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

Can't wait to read book 3 Rogue.

Just as good as Croak

Hmm, I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. I just finished it a few minutes ago. I'm now sitting here, wondering how I really feel about it. I figured the story wouldn't end. Just like book 1, it's left at a cliff hanger and you must buy book 3 to get any closure. But I expected that. What I didn't expect was for there to be no moving forward in the story line. It's hard to explain without giving spoilers.
I didn't like that there was so much jumping around, literally. They're in one place, then another, then another, over and over. There were several times when I thought I may have zoned out during the audiobook and missed a chunk of book. Also, there's no time given. Has it been an hour, a day, or a whole week? With as much jumping from place to place, it's hard to tell the time.
And honestly, the ending just got stupid. The first part of the book was fine. The second, with all the jumping and characters, new gifts, new beings, deaths, etc. it just got so jangled that it was stupid.
Also, what's the point of being "special" with the rare ability to "damn" if anyone can just easily take it (or copy your power with a touch and then use it themselves?) Which leads me to also wonder......why are scythes so readily available? The reapers have their very own scythe, made just for them. So why are they a dime a dozen and can be taken and used by any reaper?
So I will give this audiobook 3 stars. The narrator was spot on again. I will go ahead and buy book 3, just for closure and to feel like I haven't wasted my money on the first 2. (If I didn't already have money sunk into the first 2 books, I would not continue with the series.)

No Progress With The Story

What did you like best about Scorch? What did you like least?

The characters in the story are witty and likable. The book actually made me laugh out loud. Gina Damico's Grimsphere is a cleverly built world that provides an entertaining backdrop for the story.

Would you recommend Scorch to your friends? Why or why not?

No. There are way too many places where you want to shake someone and shout, "It's obvious! Why don't you do..." And I just want to say that it easier to grab a scythe out of someone's hand than any other item in the universe. It happens all the time in this book. The only thing that is easier take is the ability to damn. SPOILER - The revelation that Lex had been killing bad guys all along just dropped out of thin air. It's like chapters were left out of the book.

Which scene was your favorite?

SPOILER - I did get a certain satisfaction out of Lex strangling Zara.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I'd wait for the dvd.

Any additional comments?

Jessica Almasy does an incredible job of bringing the cast of characters to life.

Great characters, not so great story.
