It wasn't the worst sound Paine had ever heard, but it came very close - a single strangled cry, and then a terrible gasping, then the sound of the receiver banging against a table leg again and again. Paine's caller had said that he was going to hang himself; the private detective didn't have time not to believe him.

In a haunting novel of detection which calls to mind the writing of Ross Macdonald, Al Sarrantonio has created an investigator whose search uncovers clues about his own past and a crime that has its roots in secrets not only thought buried, but lost as well.

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

This book is reminiscent of the old film noirs private eye stories. It starts with a very compelling hook but, unfortunately for me, I just didn't latch onto any of the characters. It felt very dry and somewhat meandering. The narrator did a nice job in conveying the mood of the film noirs type story.

This is the first book in the Jack Pain series. Jack is hired to find out about a man that supposedly hanged himself. Paine doesn't think so. This book was easy to follow and has a good story line. Robert J. Sciglimpaglia does a good job narrating this book. I did speed it up some. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review.

A dark family mystery with hard boiled noir elements and police characters. It's a breezy mystery that does not overstay with a good introduction that simmers and ends in a 'it had to end somehow' revelation. This is the sort of stuff best to seep on the vibe and taking twists for what they are, often as grist for Detective Paine to chew on detecting rather than as the reason for the book. I felt the narration was a little too simple with some errors and too hushed a voice that was serviceable but not great.

A new author, liked the plot and how he figured it out. It was rather a challenge for this investigator, and frustrating. Enjoyed and the narration
Given audio for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
