#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this “deeply engrossing thriller” (The Washington Post) from the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

The Racketeer is guilty of only one thing: keeping us engaged until the very last page.”—USA Today

In the history of the United States, only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five. His body is found in his remote lakeside cabin. There is no sign of forced entry or struggle. Just two dead bodies: Judge Fawcett and his young secretary. And one large, state-of-the-art, extremely secure safe, opened and emptied.

One man, a former attorney, knows who killed Judge Fawcett, and why. But that man, Malcolm Bannister, is currently residing in the Federal Prison Camp near Frostburg, Maryland. Though serving time, Malcolm has an ace up his sleeve. He has information the FBI would love to know. Malcolm would love to tell them. But everything has a price—and the man known as the Racketeer wasn’t born yesterday.

And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. A great story, a fast moving pace, and great characters all combine for a winning formula. Narrator was particularly good differentiating the characters.

Typically great Grisham

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I would say it was time well spent. It dragged some in the begging and I wondered if this was going to be a waste of my time. Thankfully, it picked up. However, I should add that sometimes the story telling was a little "see Jack run" - elementary.

Would you be willing to try another book from John Grisham? Why or why not?

Sure, I like John Grisham.

Have you listened to any of J.D. Jackson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I had not listened to J.D. Jackson before but I did enjoy his performance.

Do you think The Racketeer needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No, I do not. I don't think it was good enough to have a follow-up.

Any additional comments?

This was no where near my favorite Grisham novel. Lots of it was more fantasy than fact, so that was a put off. I do however like that the person that was mistreated gets to tell his story in his own words. I won't say more than that so as to not spoil it for others.

Great narrator

I was never a big Grisham fan but this book converted me! Great ending that I didn't see coming! Worth the credit!

This story kept me guessing all the way to the end. The narration is easy to listen to.

Would you try another book from John Grisham and/or J.D. Jackson?

Yes, I'm a Grisham fan.

Would you recommend The Racketeer to your friends? Why or why not?

I wouldn't recommend that anyone buy this book new and in hardback. It's ok as a summer read by the pool or on a long flight, but the plot was just too good to be true and fairly unremarkable.

What aspect of J.D. Jackson’s performance would you have changed?

It was a bit stilted.

Too good to be true
