Critic reviews

"Yo ho ho? get ready for a ripping good yarn.... This nonstop action adventure has all the elements of a perfect summertime thriller - pirate treasure of unimaginable worth, 300-year-old cryptograms written in invisible ink, a legendary curse, and a driven captain who will stop at nothing to reach his goal. The red-hot authors of Reliquary score another big winner." ( Library Journal)

The action and plotting in the story are very good. There are some rough places where characters act ridiculously obtuse or change motivations without warning, and sometimes you wonder if the medicine and science has any basis in fact. Mostly, though, it's a fun story with a fun premise and basic but interesting characters. It's a good book to keep you alert on a long drive.

Good treasure story.

Preston and Child have become some of my favorite authors through audible. There ability to grow characters and draw you in is amazing. Great story, draws upon your childhood sense of adventure and desire to believe in buried treasure! A good listen.

Would have got a 5 but for the length and the narrator. Scott Brick is good, but not great.

long but worth it

I remember reading about this pit in National Geographic years and years ago, the story, like a lot of these thrillers is based on solid ground, then the pair or writers is able to build a great thriller around it. Does it spin out into the land of fantasy at some point? Maybe it just barely brushes it, but the overall story is solid and exciting and moves the reader into the action with a great deal of velocity. The dialog is well crafted and the characters are very well developed leading to the feeling by the reader of being invested in their fates. I think if you like action thrillers then this is a great pick, you will enjoy this story a great deal.

Well crafted fast paced action thriller

If you could sum up Riptide in three words, what would they be?

Fun, exciting, nostalgic

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Loved the setting and the excitement of a deep pit and roaring waves!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Almost every sentence sounded as if it was the finale of the book. Very poor reading. Very little excitement when the words required it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Great Story - Poor Reader

Preston and Child have done it once again with a hard to put down adventure! This story's structure is similar to some of the other entries of the authors' works like The Ice Limit and Thunderhead, where a scientific team of some kind assembles to (insert plot here, no spoilers, you're welcome)). This was a very fun novel to listen to, and I highly recommend listening if you are already a fan of these authors. If you haven't tried them yet, Riptide is a fun novel to start off with. Scott Brick is one of my favorite narrators, and I have lost count of how many of his works I have listened to.

It’s not a bad story at all. Strikingly similar to the show curse of oak island but written long before the show was made. It may be loosely based on the island though. I enjoyed it.

Curse of oak island??
