A New York Times best seller!

Lucas Davenport returns in the most harrowing and unexpected Prey novel yet - the story of a congenial man and his most uncongenial obsession....

Art history professor James Qatar’s hobby was taking secret photographs of women. At night when he was all alone, he’d dream about them and indulge his fantasies. Then one day, his fantasy went too far. Now it’s Qatar’s turn to become an obsession - of Davenport’s. And for both men, there’s no turning back.

Hear Lucas Davenport on the case in more of John Sandford's Prey novels.

An excellent detective novel about a serial killer

Of John Sandford's 44 unabridged audio novels more than half are in my Audible library. Chosen Prey is an excellent suspense thriller about a university art professor who is a serial killer of young women that fit a specific profile. It is novel 12 in what will be the 27 novel Lucas Davenport series when Golden Prey is released next month. I did not especially like the Lucas Davenport character in early novels in the series, but after Weather became his girlfriend and later wife author John Sandford changed the Davenport character to a more responsible person. (The couple are engaged to be married in this book.) When their adopted daughter Letty became interested in law enforcement and became a major character the series gets even better. Gathering Prey, book 25 in the series, features college student Letty and is my favorite of the novels in the series I have listened to.

John Sandford is an outstanding author of modern detective novels. All of his novels do not earn 5 stars, but all are quite good and most earn at least 4 stars. Richard Ferrone narrates all of the Sandford novels I have listened to. He is a rock solid narrator. I recommend this novel, this series and this author to those who like intense suspense thrillers.

Good Sandford

Okay, so this thing is predictable early on. If the Phillies played the Lancaster Barnstormers, well the winner'd be predictable, but both the major league talent and even the minor league enthusiasm would be great to watch. Sanford's reeeeeeely major league (for example see my review of 'Saturn Run'). That's the way with Lucas Davenort novels, they're a whirled of fun. They're as much about the trip as the destination.

Davenport's not a super-Sherlock. He follows breadcrumbs of facts, frequently guesses wrong, and bumps into things. Here again he follows, misuses, and bumps. But doggedly... doggedly. Don't you like that in the guy?

Well I do, and I like Sanford's rarely disappointing craftsmanship. Here's what professional commercial writing looks like, and through Ferrone's voice, what it sounds like. The villain's a foul funny guy who deserves a comeuppance - Totally!

You know it'll come, right?
Or will it?

Fine stuff...
Good Sanford...
Nuff said.

a great Sandford thriller

I just never tire of this author -- the suspense always get me. I think "Winter Prey" is the best of the Prey series, but this one leads you an unmerry chase all the way. The reader knows what is going on, but has to watch the great Lucas Davenport put it all together. A bit different from some of the other Prey novels, and another notch in Sandford's belt.

Realistic presentation of police probllems

This is a sad but highly realistic look both at the mind of a serial killer, and at the problems police have in trying to obtain definitive evidence to convict the killer. The murderer in this case is intelligent, meticulous and careful to avoid leaving real clues about his crimes. A very gripping, unhappy tale.

dissapointed

A friend suggested I listen to the Prey books, and by chance this is my first one. The story is good, but the dialog is often choppy and feels like a characature of what "real" characters would do and say in this situation. I simply can not take these characters seriously!

Also, the reader is less than impressive. He does try to change his voice to do different characters, but with minor characters especially I find that they sound one way in one part of a scene and then different a little later. He also has killed the pronunciation on several words - so badly that I would not have known what the word was if it were not in context, and at least once referred to a female character as "he". Not to mention, if you listen there is this annoying sound through much of the recording - it could be an echo, but I suspect that someone else was reading something nearby.

All in all, I MAY give Sandford another try based on the strength of the original recommendation I got, but I don't imagine I would ever try this reader again.

Chosen Prey Was Not For Me.....

I've enjoyed several of the Davenport series but not all... this one was not for me. I thought the story was "kinda" strange. A pervert moves from a hobby of creating sexy pictures of women into murdering them. For reasons that's not easily put into words, I found the whole story dislikeable and didn't' find it entertaining at all. It was not just one thing, it was just about everything. The story never became compelling to me... I never became invested in the story, the narrator made mistakes like saying "he" instead of "she," the dialog was often choppy; but most of all, the characters were over the top. They came across as cartoonish to me. Disappointed....

Gave 3 stars because I like Ferrone's performance ability...
