ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE'S 100 BEST MYSTERY AND THRILLER BOOKS OF ALL TIME

"Cases rarely come much colder than the decades-old disappearance of teen heiress Harriet Vanger from her family's remote island retreat north of Stockholm, nor do fiction debuts hotter than this European best seller...At once a strikingly original thriller and a vivisection of Sweden's dirty not-so-little secrets, this first of a trilogy introduces a provocatively odd couple." (Publishers Weekly)

"Combine the chilly Swedish backdrop and moody psychodrama of a Bergman movie with the grisly pyrotechnics of a serial-killer thriller, then add an angry punk heroine and a down-on-his-luck investigative journalist, and you have the ingredients of Stieg Larsson's first novel." (The New York Times)

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a striking novel. Just when I was thinking there wasn't anything new on the horizon, along comes Stieg Larsson with this wonderfully unique story. I was completely absorbed." (Michael Connelly)

I couldn't stop listening to this book - I had to finish it. It's not edge of your seat kind of thriller - it's more of a suspenseful thinking kind of thriller - if that makes sense at all. It has enough twists to make your head spin and it was kind of confusing at the start since there were so many characters involved, but it was very well written and the characters' lives and the way they cross paths is just very good story telling. The narrator was very good, too.

Very Well Written

My recommendations maybe a few years late but better late than never.

I've seen both the Swedish(2008) and US(2012) versions of the movie and they both do not stand a chance before this masterpiece. The movies destroyed many good things which supposed to be known and appreciated by the reader.

When I started listening It took me 3 tries to go past first 30 minutes ( Mr Vance has a very specific voice, takes some time to get used to) but than I couldn't stop.

Please read or listen but don't watch this crappy movies.

In the tradition of great Swedish mysteries, Stieg Larson does a lovely job with this book. Calm, direct, unemotional, and fascinating, this book delivers. Great narrator as well.

Wonderfully Swedish

This book was quite entertaining. It starts and ends a bit slow, but the middle 7/8ths of the book is quite a good mystery.

It's not a perfect book, but it was definitely worth a listen.

Entertaining

I had a friend say she did not want to read the series because this book was too graphic for her. And it was. I like the second one, The Girl who played with Fire, even better. I just downloaded the 3rd book today, and cannot wait to read it. These have been my favorite so far.

Love this!

I loved this story. It took a bit of time to get into this unusual and thought-provoking mystery, but once it grabbed me I couldn't put it down. The story, set in Sweden, principally involves the disappearance many years before of a young woman and the renewed investigation of that event. But there's much more to the story because the thoroughly interesting characters have their own issues and agendas which become sub-plots on their own, and it all comes together in ways totally unpredictable. The narration was a bit flat early on in a very British way, but overall was perfectly acceptable. A unique story and highly recommended.

Listening to this book is absolutely great. Normally I listen to audio books during driving my car long distances, however this audio book kept me glued to my IPOD. Much to the frustration of my surroundings. I did not stop listening.
Nice plot and unexpected changes. Some parts are rather dark and a bit twisted, but I guess these parts were written during the winter. The end was a bit off and strange as it took a sudden direction to end the book.
The next book is unfortunately only abridged, which means I have to wait until the unabridged becomes available. All have fun listening

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, from beginning to end. The last two hours of the book are not quite as convincing as the other hours, but did not diminish my overall satisfaction with this book!
The reader was incredibly talented, and convincing as all the different characters.

Well written, and wonderfully narrated.
