Charlie Howard isn’t only a part-time crime writer and part-time thief; he’s also a magician. For his next trick, he’ll relieve Josh Masters, the famous illusionist vying for the affections of Charlie’s friend Victoria, of $60,000 in casino chips stashed in his hotel safe. Revenge would be sweet - if there weren’t a dead redhead floating in Masters’ bathtub and if Masters hadn’t just disappeared in a puff of smoke after cheating at roulette. Convinced that Charlie was in on the scam, the casino’s owners give him an impossible mission: either pull off an elaborate heist to reimburse the house for every dollar his “accomplice” made off with, or enjoy a one-way trip into the desert.

"Fun Story"
I enjoyed the main character's sharp wit and sarcasm throughout the story despite the things that were happening to him.
I love Simon Vance's style. Also enjoyed Safe House by Chris Ewan. His pace is good without feeling rushed. He performs women's voices well without sounding forced. He is a little weak when doing American accented characters.
It was a fun story, not a masterpiece.I enjoyed the twists and turns and how all the loose ends come together at the end. I would read another book in this series because the main character is so likable.
"Good Thief and good book"
I would definitely listen to this book again.... It's an easy listen and the narration is perfect.
I like the main character's perseverance. He just never gives up on his writing or his "side" occupation. His personality moves the story forward. Each city is a supporting character to Charlie.
Simon Vance has a great voice for this character.... not too stuffy, not too sophisticated. He sounds like a witty friend. His voice for female characters is also very good. The female voices do not sound helpless but rather they compliment the main character well.
The "real" guidebook to where you want to go.
When are the next books coming out? I can't wait. My husband and I enjoy this series so much.
Any story well told is worth listening to.
"Chatty with a too convenient plotting."
If this bit of dialogue sounds ok then you'll enjoy this book; "Darling, we're British and we're charming. The regular laws of the world simply don't apply to us. Let's dash off on another irresponsible adventure." That's the tone you need to accept or should I say endure to get through this one.
The narration by Simon Vance, as always: perfect.
"I bought this book on special."
I will be more careful next time. I read it to the end, thinking that surely it would get better, but it did not. I will not read another book in this series.
"Funny, Engaging & a Delight to the Ear"
I loved the wit & dry humor of the author, delivered impeccably by the narrator. The main character's descriptions were thoroughly entertaining.
He captured the essence of Charlie & delivered it. Since I knew that he was also the narrator of the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, I was impressed with his amazing performance in this novel. He made the story & the characters come to life.
I laughed a lot!
This is a great light read - it's not fluff, but it's fun.
