Publisher's Summary

In the fourth book of the Bloody Jack series, Jacky Faber, having been called a pirate and had a price put on her head by the King of England, has no choice but to stay out of sight.

Hoping for a safe hiding place, she returns to the Lawson Peabody School for Young Girls in Boston, but the calm doesn't last long.

On a class field trip to Boston Harbor, the girls are abducted and forced into the hold of the Bloodhound, a ship bound for the slave markets on the Barbary Coast where they will be put up on the auction block and sold into Arab harems.

Jacky wouldn't dream of going down without a fight, but the delicate Lawson peabody girls are in over their heads. Although Jacky will use anything in her arsenal to help her well-heeled classmates, she isn't so certain they will find the strength and courage needed to survive. But if she can convince them to trade petticoats and propriety for her daring escape plan, the girls just might become their own rescuers.

    "Loved it! Loved them all."

I've been a member of Audible for three years now and this is only the second time I have purchased books over and above my 2 credits a month. My credits went to the second and third books in the Jacky Faber series, Curse of the Blue Tattoo and Under the Jolly Roger, and when finished those mid month, I immediately purchased the fourth, the Belly of the Bloodhound.

Since I couldn't stop listening to how the Lawson Peabody girls were planning to escape the Bloodhound, sadly I finished it four whole days before new credits enter my account to continue my adventures with Jackie Faber. No worries, the fifth book, Mississippi Jack is downloading as I write and Ill have credits for book six.

Why am I telling this...to warn my mates that these tales will capture you and nothing short of good keel hauling will stop you from listening.

    "Enough, ENOUGH I SAY..."

yeah right, I said Bloody Jack #4 would be the last Jacky Faber for me for at least a little while but I cannot resist. I am downloading #5 as I write this. These stories are just too great. They are beautifully written and skillfully - no, masterfully narrated by Katherine Kellgren. You want fun, excitement, beauty and compassion in a story, the life and times of the irrepressible Jacky Faber are just what the doctor ordered.

    "Great story for older readers"

This is yet another fantastic book in the "Bloody Jack" series. The second I finished #3, I rushed in to get this one. Be warned though: there is quite a bit more sexual content in this book than in the others. The girls are to be sold as sex slaves, and one is judged as "a fine specimen to warm a sultan's bed." While no sexual activity actually takes place it is mentioned in the book frequently.

As usual the narration of this book is out of this world and makes the adventures of "Bloody Jack" so much more exciting than just reading it. I think everyone should hear this series instead of read it!

    "Couldn't stop listening!"

I got the first book in the Bloody Jack series for my son, so he would have something to occupy his time on long car trips. After about a half an hour of listening to that delightful book, I myself was hooked. I must say that In the Belly of the Bloodhound might just be the best in the series. I found myself actually laughing out loud, and crying for the girls in their journey, not to mention I loved it so well, I could not fall asleep until it was finished. Going on three o'clock in the morning now, and I can sleep satisfied. This is most certianly worth the listen.

    "Still Excellent, If Dark"

Not the jaguar of L.A. Meyer's series but certainly a top notch breed of it's own. An interesting twist I never expected, a wonderful refocus on the evolution not just of Jackie but of her classmates. I can't wait for the next book! Kellgren as always a treat of a narrator. (Could there be a more perfect lady for this role?)

I'm addicted to audiobooks. I've listened to probably 300 (maybe more) audiobooks most of which are historical romances. Listening is much easier than reading and you can do other things while listening. When reading you can't do anything but read.

    "Another good one!"

Katherine Kellgren nails it again; however, I found that I wanted the girls to take over the bloody Bloodhound and be done with it. It was a good story, but it did drag on a bit. Cannot be missed though!!!!!

I practically sobbed near the end of the story. Jacky Faber is one special girl!!!!

"Perhaps my favorite of the series so far . . ."

This installment of the Bloody Jack series is one of the most creative I have read. The girls of the Lawson Peabody School for Young Girls are thrust into a situation where they must rely solely on their wits and each other. New alliances are formed, previously unknown skills are mastered, and more is leaned about Jacky's life on the streets of London as an orphan. Warning #1: You will laugh out loud many times throughout this book. Warning #2: You will probably cry, too. Warning #3: If you love to hate Clarissa Worthington Howe, look out!

    "I'm now a Jacky addict."

I love the stories, the swashbuckling and the fact that women can be strong and do whatever it takes to get where they want to go. Katherine Kellgren is one fantastic story teller and singer.
Thank you to both the author and the narrator for weeks of fun.

I'm getting this series as a present for my early teens granddaughter too.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to almost anyone! Great story, great characters and plot and an amazing narration!

Which character – as performed by Katherine Kellgren – was your favorite?

Kethy simply performs all characters well. Very believable and makes it extremely easy to follow any conversation.

    Any additional comments?

My wife and I enjoyed this book as much as the rest of the family! This book is great for both boys and girls, and the whole series has been great at demonstrating good and bad and consequences of making decisions. Irregardless of how well intentioned the decisions were.

Although extremely fun and entertaining, there is considerable value in the messages it sends too:

    (1) Consider your options carefully using your critical thinking skills before making a decision. Then be willing to accept the consequences if things do not work out as desired or expected. This idea alone is refreshing. Jackie has never shied away from chastisement and has always stood behind and tried to help those around her, especially anyone in need. She often gives everyone the benefit of the doubt.

    (2) It also nicely demonstrates that although issues are sometimes different, Jackie is able to not only succeed but to successfully stand-out in performing her duties and working alongside boys and men. Especially given the time-frame in which the stories take place, women had very few legal rights and very specific, albeit limited expectations. Still she rises up and demonstrates her abilities and willingness to overcome all obstacles. Lessons such as these are good for everyone of all ages and sexes.
