Isabel's life is thrown for a few loops when her cousin Mimi arrives from Dallas with her husband Joe. Through Mimi and Joe, Isabel meets Texas hotshot Tom Bruce, who is about to marry someone Isabel suspects of gold-digging. Further complicating matters, Tom seems to have an unusual level of interest in Isabel. Meanwhile, Isabel has her own feelings to deal with, not to mention those of her beloved niece Cat, whose romantic interest may not be up to snuff.
It would all be quite a lot for one person to contend with if that person wasn't Isabel, who is always ready to apply her well-defended sense of ethics to any situation.

"Charmingly told...Its graceful prose shines, and Isabel's interior monologues - meditations on a variety of moral questions - are bemused, intelligent, and entertaining." (The Seattle Times)
"McCall Smith's assessments of fellow humans are piercing and profound. [His] depictions of Edinburgh are vivid and seamless...His fans are sure to embrace these moral peregrinations among the plaid." (San Francisco Chronicle)
"brain candy"
I love this entire series, and found this book to be different than the last two, but still great. One of my favorite things about Mr. McCall-Smith's books is his ability to get inside the head of each of us and bring to life all those crazy thoughts and worries we all have but hide from others. This book excels in bringing to life Ms. Dalhousy's personal growth and new experiences in life in a way that has been stilted in previous books. The reader/performer is also excellent, using different accents and tones to express each character.
If you want mysteries to solve, this book doesn't have them, but if you want to enjoy the fun of personal growth and experimentation through the eyes of a 42yo brilliant woman, then this is the book for you.
"Another winner"
This is the second Alexander McCall Smith series I am hooked on now. What started as a gamble with the first dectective agency has now grown into a full blown following!
I have enjoyed this title in the series best so far with Isabell in and out of scrapes throughout the story - the shocking revelation at the end of the book did it for me!
Immigration lawyer in Kansas City. I like Character driven dramas, fantasy (monsters, magic and witches oh my!) and coming of age stories. Favs include: The Book Thief, The Game of Throne series, Harry Potter Series, Dresden Files, Nightside series, anything by Neil Gaimen, 100 Years of Solitude.
"Another good one"
Alexander McCall Smith never dissappoints. I love his books, I love his characters. They are happy, light and carefree listens.
"Fabulous Read"
This was the finest book (so far) in the series. I can hardly wait to start the next one! I was caught off guard with the ending!
"Good book"
Good read and one of my favorite narrators. I would buy it again.
"Another AMS victory"
Thanks for another wonderful character study.
This was a delightful read.
"Right Attitude"
The characters are so appealing, and the performance is excellent.
The love story side.
Have not listened to any other performances. This is was excellent.
When she finds she is pregnant! I especially like the resolving of the conflicts of her friends and family, and her inner struggles with her feelings and processing her emotions.
Alexander McCall Smith is a great writer. He is especially wonderful with his women characters. This series is so thoughtful and very instructional of "doing the right thing" in all her social situations.
"Disappointing"
While I enjoyed listening to the reader and characters ...
...I kept waiting for something to happen. It didn't. I thoroughly enjoy the stories in Smith's other series (Ladies Detective) this story went nowhere.
None
Very disappointed in this book. After listening to his Ladies Detective series, I was expecting much more. It just went nowhere, The reader was fine; story was not. Boring.
"Not the same caliber"
I've been a big fan of Mr. Smith's books. However, I did not enjoy the theme of this book: Isabelle decides to "advance" her relationship with Jamie. There was more than usual amount of second-guessing, indecision, and "prattle" despite being an abridged version. I will consider this book an aberration and continue to look for other books in the mystery series.
"Dull! One star is too much"
There is very little that happens in the of story of this book and none of it that makes it an engaging read, if one is looking for more than just reading about the everyday happenings of some dull characters lives. I wasn't following how far along I was getting in the book and was quite surprised that I reached the end with so very little happenging throughout the book!
