Publisher's Summary

The War of 1812 continues, and Jack Aubrey sets course for Cape Horn on a mission after his own heart: intercepting a powerful American frigate outward bound to play havoc with the British whaling trade. Stephen Maturin has orders of his own in the world of secret intelligence. Disaster in various guises awaits them in the Great South Sea and in the far reaches of the Pacific: typhoons, castaways, shipwrecks, murder, and criminal insanity.

Don't miss the rest of the Aubrey/Maturin series.

What the Critics Say

"Taken together, the novels are a brilliant achievement. They display staggering erudition on almost all aspects of eighteenth-century life, with impeccable period detail. In addition. O'Brian has a gift for the comic." (Times Literary Supplement)
"Like Aubrey and Maturin playing Mozart duets beneath a Pacific Moon, he works elegant variations on the tradition of the seafaring adventure story." (The New York Times Book Review)

    "Pleasantly Suprised"

When I purchased this audio book I was concerned that it would be boring and no where as good as the printed book. I was dead wrong. This audio book has been very enjoyable to listen to at times when reading the book was unavailable. And this audio book also helped me to get a better idea as to the intonation of some of the words and phrases of the King's English!! I plan on getting the rest of the set as well and then can listen to them as I will.

    "What an incredible series."

I have always like long books as to able to Immerse myself in to the story and to get to really know the characters. I love the fact that I can listen to these one after another without a break and still my the story fresh. I am looking forward to the remaining 10 1/2 books.

Simon Vance does an excellent job on the characters.
